"Free" PAYG phones from Orange

We've started to give away phones, as long as £30 credit is applied to them. Good idea or not?

So once people leave the shop with their free phone.. they never buy credit again and switch to a better provider? lol

Bad idea i think

No doubt it's only a very basic phone too.

Any chance of a link to the offer?

Moto F3 or Alacatel e230. It's in Orange retail.

Hmmmm it's an OK idea I suppose. No different from the PAYG Retentions deal that can give you free phones at the moment (again it is only the basic models given free there).

For the very occasional users this a good deal.

It's cheapening your network. The phones are rubbish. You can get the Motorola one for £15 (with £10 credit included in this) from Tesco. Doesn't even have a backlight (my first phone, back in 1997 had one, so what Moto are thinking I don't know) Orange sliding further downhill in my opinion.

lol yea a sign of desperation, maybe their customers are starting to leave due to their poor indian CS!

"Doesn't even have a backlight"

Hahaha it's like going back in time!

Not desperation Orange have offered these phones for free to existing customers for ages.

And going back in time? I have spoken to many customers, many elderly, who absolutely love the Motofone F3 because it is so basic and simple and didn't cost them the earth for the added security of always being able to be in touch with people.

Think outside the box, and not in your narrow minded world where everyone wants an ultra modern state of the art piece of kit.

As someone said, its good for the basic mobile users - OAPs, Kids, Drivers etc.. but then £30 is a bit steep i reckon for these users. £10 will last my grandad 3 months on his Nokia 5110.. which he recently just upgraded to a Motorola V3 or something similar.

Fair point - the battery life on the phone is excellent, however, I've heard that many people find the phone's interface more difficult to use than a standard mobile?

Maybe you should think things through before shoeboxing people into particular stereotypes? I currently own and use two mobiles. I have a Samsung D900, which, being released around August 2006 is neither state-of-the-art or particularly new, it's a functional handset, which I bought due to its size and shape rather than it's features (which are quite basic compared with Nokia's N series or Sony Ericsson's K series).

The second phone I currently own is a Nokia 1101, which is by far my favourite. The fact that it doesn't have a calander annoys be no end, however, the battery lasts for ages, it's easy to use, has a backlight, and has ringtones you can actually hear. It's also very reliable, and gives a good signal.

I can neither afford, nor particular want the latest iPhone or such like, sure, I love to read about these things, and keep up to date with what's going on, but please don't put me in the same box as these people that always want the latest phone and buy a new car every year or whatever...

I'm presuming you didn't mean to quote me for that bit, or that you are backing me up. Thought you were disagreeing with me at first, but you seem to back up what I said

Carphone Warehouse are selling a Sony Ericsson J110i for £4.95 plus £10 credit on Virgin.

the moto f3 is a no frills phone, my other half has one as a spare phone, and is using it abroad at the mo on her hols...she says the biggest prob is that the user interface is very tough to get used to from using the all seeing and all dancing phones she and I are used to! But it is a bargain phone, picked it up for £13inc postage brand new off ebay and unlocked too.

I think the best bargain basement phones are the nokias, battery life on them are mad, eg the 11xx series

And one that needs charging every night as well!

Some of today's phones, that include everything but the kitchen, are rubbish as you need access to a mains supply each day in order to keep them charged up - Nokia N95 and Apple's iPhone come to mind. That's not my idea of convenience and advancement.
