They look absolutely dreadful in some of the images that I have seen of them that are dating from the 80’s; but musically – what really counts – they sound superior compared to much of what was coming out around them!

In the scheme of metal hierarchy, exactly where do these technical metal gods from Seattle rank?

Can't say I care for them that much, but Silent Lucidity is a top class tune

No. But they did deliver one of the genre's classics in Operation: Mindcrime. The rest of their stuff pales in comparison though. They're not even in the same league as Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest and a few others.

No, not the best, but some of their stuff is good, we had Silent Lucidity as one of the slow dances at our wedding as it is such a great song

Don't listen to enough contempory metal to know for sure but Rage for Order, Operation: Mindcrime and Empire are certainly a cut above the typical - metal with brains, a sort of Blue Oyster Cult for the late 80s and 90s. I dunno how they fared after Empire but I like them.

other tracks dream in infra red and london
hard band to figure out were they serious ly neo natzi or sending it all up via pink floyd esque tracks
either way some un missable music

The "Queen of the Ryche" ep, and debut album, "The Warning", both contain elements of NWOBHM. They appeared to really hit their stride with the following album "Rage for Order", which was followed by what many consider to be their magnum opus; Operation Mindcrime. I assume "Empire" would have been their commercial peak?

Glad someone else thinks the same as me, though it was a close thing for me. I had the choice of (The old Somewhere in Time) Iron Maiden or Iron Maiden (the New World Era)

Either version would beat most metal acts into a cocked hat. Even Di'anno's Maiden was class! No contest, I repeat, no contest. Maiden will always be the kings of metal, and that's just the way it is, and the way it should be.

I thought Promised Land was really good, but the albums after than were disappointing. After Q2K i gave up and havent listened to any of the more recent releases.
I loved Rage For Order and Mindcrime, thought Empire was patchy.
Certainly not the best metal band of the last 25 years, but then again i dont think Iron Maiden are either. Plus its really difficult to keep up good fresh music for that sort of time period, even Maiden, Priest and Metallica have all found that out!

Promised Land was their first that i heard as a new release and really like it at the time. Disliked the follow up, Hear in the Now Frontier, but a decade on i actually appreciate that album.

I love Queensryche's early stuff - Operation: Mindcrime is phenomenal! The albums before that also had a good sound, even if less polished. After that, Empire was also great, but for me their albums got worse and worse - now I don't even buy them.

Well, by worse and worse I don't mean bad - they're well done - just moved too far away from what I liked them for.

Another (less obvious) track of theirs that I like (as there's also a great cartoon with it!) is this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LoWkNordpZE
