Hello,
Samsung SD DVD player, Onkyo 905, Samsung 50" 1080i TV, Sky+.

Would just love anyone to tell me best way to connect these bit together to get best picture and sound through the receiver. Just starting...the usual idiot....but then again I can fix your air-conditioning!

Any help appreciated.

Well I'm not sure what connections your Samsung DVD player has, but if it has HDMI then use that to connect to the Amp and that will carry both video and audio. If it doesn't then use Component (the red / green / blue phono-type leads) for video and optical for sound.

For Sky+ use Component for video and optical for sound (remember to set Dolby D in the Sky+ Setup menu).

Then use HDMI as the main display output to your TV and get the amp to upconvert/upscale everything - to 1080p if your TV supports it. Are you sure it is 1080i and not 1080p? What model is it?

For Sky+ use Component
The only Sky box that has component out is SkyHD.
The best you can get with Sky+ is RGB with S-Video a close second.

Oops! Been a while since I had a Sky+ box and couldn't remember for sure what connections it had - just knew it didn't have HDMI! Thanks for the correction.

Ah ok - so you can't feed it a 1080p signal. In that case see which looks better on your screen out of 720p and 1080i from the amp.
