i have just sent my cancellation letter to Vodafone as i couldn't get the phone i wanted directly with them unless i wanted Pay as you go. this gave me little choice but to go to a 3rd party.

I won't touch Carphone Warehouse with a barge poll as they ripped my ex off. they kept taking any amount they wanted on any day they felt like and claimed he was using the phone. They never sent a bill so he didn't even know how much they were taking until his statements from the bank came through. The sim had been out the phone and not used for at least 9 out of the 12 months as the phone basically made him broke all the time thanks to Carphone Warehouse and his bank who gladly let Carphone Warehouse take the money out and then charged him for not having enough funds. he has now changed banks and they have since paid him back £700 for their shamebolic service. i have used The Link before and had no problems. This has now gone so this only left Phones 4 U. I know from reading this formum and speaking to Vodafoda, they are just as shambolic. i phoned to try and cancel the web offer i took and was given a better tariff and an 8 month contract (instead of 12). i will probably go back directly to Vodafoeda after the contract finishes.

i have also read on this formum of scammer ring your number once the cancellation letter has been sent. I have a new phone with a new number (still on vodafone but number bought by Phones 4 U so couldn't PAC it) and i've had a scam phone call from 08080000144. i didn't answer it as i haven't given my number out to anyone other than friends so i googled the number and it seems it could either be vodafone, SKY or a marketing company. this is defineatly a scam then. i couldn't find a thread on the spy so this is just to warn other people about it.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. What are you warning us about? You forgot to say what the scam phone call was about.

Hi,

The number you've given here is likely to be a number linked to our Vodafone retentions department. Naturally if we have a customer who wants to cancel their account, we'll attempt to retain them with offers etc before their accounts are cancelled.

This would fit in with you saying that you'd only given your number to friends.

Vodafone wouldn't give your number out to any other organisations and certainly wouldn't get involved in scams of any sort as our priority is to protect our customers’ details and privacy.

There is the option for you to register for the TPS service (telephone preference service). This is a service where your number is entered onto a database so that cold calling and promotional calling is not permitted to your number.

All companies making such calls have to check the TPS service first to ensure you're number isn't on the list before they call you. If it is on the list then they can't contact you at all.

Hopefully this information will help settle your mind about the calls and give you an insight into how the call could have come about and how to protect yourself from marketing companies etc.

my point was that i've got a new phone. i'm being constantly called by 08080000144 who according to other website is either sky, vodafone or a marketing company. it can't be vodafone retentions department calling as it's on my new phone and not my old phone.

Point is it has to a scam. don't answer it or give out details to them.

Yes i am aware the P4U are crap also as my battery doesn't fit properly so the sim doesn't go completely in. The shop didn't want to know unless it was giving me the same phone on another new contract. i've just put a piece of paper in it to push the battery up.

i've learnt unless you go directly to the phone companies, you will be ripped off at some point either with contracts, payments (take any amount) and payment dates (taken when they like).

moral of the story is if you want a vodafone moby goto a vodafone shop, likewise if you want an o2 phone ( i wouldnt recommend it ) you would go to o2, orange orange shop, tmobile tmobile shop etc etc

I don't understand the logic of decrying something as a scam when one isn't even sure who the call is from. Let alone the nature of the call. That's not to say that I don't hope these calls stop as I'm sure they are irritating.

There are practical steps that can be taken to limit this type of annoyance. If I was receiving unwanted calls from a number, I would find out who was calling and ask them to stop. I have registered my mobile number with the Telephone Preference Service which will help prevent marketing calls.
