Yup, the BRITS are crap, but The Mercury Music Prize is even more pointless.
Nobody cares that a dozen people think some busker nobody has heard of gets £20,000.

Or let's rephrase that. Someone who isn't really in to music at all only thinks awards should be given to the artists they know. Which in turn is a very narrow list of crappy artists that make the charts.

The BRATS were always considered far more representative.

I think you will find a lot of people who are very much in to music also have little time for either The Brits or Mercury Music Prize simply because of the very narrow range of genres they both cover.

Neither can be said to cover the output of the entire British popular music industry.

The Mercury awards offer a wide range of genres even though the last few years haven't been eclectic as in the past. My comment was aimed at people like the poster I replied to who dismisses anybody they have never heard of.

1995 was the best one by a mile with the Jarvis, Oasis and Chumbawumba incidents. They've all been pretty dull since.

You speak the truth.
The Brits. Won by people who sell lots of records
Mercury Prize. Won by people who dont sell many records.
If said awards are about "pop music", then , by definition, that means "popular"...so perhaps the Brits is more relevant for the genre.
It was more fun when folks caused "controversy" though.

Who said "Awards are about pop music."? The Mercury Prize doesn't pretend to be just about what is popular.
