A general rule is for short cable runs and assuming the cable is physically sound there is little or no difference between one costing a five and one costing tens time the amount. A digital cable is less prone to external factors than it's analogue equivalent but it's worth remembering you can get a group together and some will swear cable X is better and the rest cable Y

This applies to any HDMI device not just HD DVD.

It's a digital signal so, in essence, it's either there or it isn't.

Of course, a poorly constructed lead can cause problems, but as the poster above states a £5 lead should do the trick just fine. There's certainly no need for gold plating, oxygen-free or any of that nonsense.

This is one of the things that always causes me great amusement. It is entirely true that a poorly made cable can mangle the signal being carried. But that will be very far from subtle in it's effects!

It does beggar belief some of the comments you see in the back page reviews of What HiFi magazine. How on earth can the sequence 10011100011100011 at the input to the Digital to analogue converter sound/look any different to the sequence 10011100011100011 just because the first travelled via some ultra pure copper cable costing 10 squillion quid and the second got there via a 2 quid job bought from Tesco?

Lets face it, most of this is subjective. If I had paid £150 for an HMDI lead I know that i would prefer the picture to a £5 cable, regardless of what sense or reality told me.

If you want a lead for a 1080p source make sure it has a high speed rating. Some cheap (and it wouldn't surprise me if some expensive) HDMI leads can't handle the bandwidth of a 1080p signal.

Any HDMI 1.3 category 1 cable should be able to carry 1080p60 otherwise it's being mis-sold, category 2 is higher specified but should not be needed.

Incidentally 1080p24 has a lower bandwidth than 1080i50.
