Hi all!

I am looking to download a firmware update to my T816 (Hitachi HDR081) but am having difficulty seeking the right cable.

So I took a look around on eBay for the right cable but most seem to be as follows:

Does anybody know whether the right type of cable is available (except the pricey one from maplin that that site reccoments) or should I think about getting the soldering iron out and whipping one up.

Found this one here but pins 1 and 9 are present. I feel a trip to Radio Shack coming on .

The cables with the pin layout you first describe are more commonly known as null modem cables, and these are not what you need to upgrade the PVR. Generally speaking, you should look for a 9-pin male to female, rs232/serial extension cable which should be straight through cables which is what the one in the ebay link you gave is. I don't think it matters that pin 1 and pin 9 are present (famous last words??? someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Made my lead, all connections seemed good, but it doesent work .

I soldered pins:
2 to 2
3 to 3
4 to 4
5 to 5
6 to 6
7 to 7
8 to 8
leaving 1 and 9 blank.

But upon powering the box up with HyperTerminal connected, nothing happens.

One thing you can do to test your connection is:
Remove the cable from your pvr. Just from the pvr, not the PC.
Short together pins 2 and 3 on the cable. These are the transmit and receive pins.
Type some characters, and you should see them appear in the hyperterminal window.
This proves that your hyperterminal is set up correctly and that there is comms happening from the PC end.
If you don't see any characters when you type, then you most probably have the wrong comm port assigned in hyperterminal.
