the way my system is set up when i want to watch sky i have to turn down the volume of my tv is there a way round this. i cant really link the system straight to the tv as it lacks outputs and inputs so i use the phono leads from sky box to the dvd player. which has the desired effect but sound still comes out of the tv would it be posible to link sky directly to my dvd as the can use the 3 leads things but will it work

answers please if you can make out my question

I'm not sure whether the phono connectors at the back of digiboxes are affected by the sound level output setting in the sound menu (Services --> 4 --> 2) - you might want to try reducing this so there is no gray bar at all if you havn't already tried this.

If I understand you correctly, there is no easy solution except to turn down the TV volume as you say, and route the sound elsewhere. Thing is, your TV is designed in such a way that you WANT to use its speakers for sound, at whatever TV volume you use, and presumably if you mute you get a constant on-screen icon reminding you that you killed the sound (this mute/volume setting wouldn't affect the audio out to your amp, but then you said you don't have that option). Guessing you bought a TV, not a monitor, but digiboxes output video and audio together for scart/aerial connections (s-video is picture only and needs seperate audio connections).

Of course, with a separates surround (and I face the same problem with sky/consoles/5.1 dvds) then you want to bypass the TV and feed straight into the amp, in which case the only way is to turn the TV volume down to defeat the TV speakers, and feed sound from the digibox etc straight to the amp )or via TV audio out). Digibox volume (check settings menus) and TV volume (as controlled by sky remote sending equivalent TV remote commands) are independent of each other.

You could always butcher your scart lead that connects the Sky box to the TV and disconnect the left and right channel.

Depends on the TV, but some have a default volume level in the setup menus. Mine (a cheap grundig jobbie) has an option, which I have set to zero as I mostly use external speakers. so have a look for that. Failing that, butchering your Scart lead is the other option. You can sometimes get away with just pulling the spades out into the casing and then wrapping them in insulation tape (I did this once).

Does your TV have a headphone socket on it? If so it might be setup so that when you put headphones in the side/front of the TV, the TV's speakers are muted.

If this is the case then just keep a pair of headphones conencted when you dont want to be hearing the TV's speakers.

And if you dont want to have a pair of headphones dangeling, perhaps you could use one of those headphone adaptors (the ones that allow you to use headphones with a large jack into a smaller port.

I presume your TV has at least one SCART (input/output) but no phono output sockets?

You can get a SCART lead with audio phono sockets looped out, if you connect this to your amp instead of your STB then you should be able to forget the tv volume altogether (set it to min)and use the amp for sound in all modes? - I think!

yes my tv has 2 scart sockets but the way it is all set up that will not work.

one is connected to sky and the other to the dvd. sky is also connected to the vcr. the dvd has many inputs. one i use for my console the red white and yellow and i use hte phono sockets in the back of the sky to connect to the dvd so i just leave the yellow video cable out.

usually most tvs have some sort of favourite setting that you can store and then use to restore brightness, colour and contrast settings this can also often be used to store the volume setting too so you may be able to do something like that if your TV has that facility. This will allow you to retrieve you volume setting with just one button and will also mean the tv defaults to the setting after it has been switched off

check your tv manual to see if you can do that and which buttons to use
