Hi

I have a particular feature on my mobile - a Sony Ericsson T610 - that I want to replicate on my landline to stop nuisance calls. (We are registered with the TPS but that doesn't make any difference)

On the mobile, I go into Calls > Manage Calls > Accept Options and can then tell the phone to accept calls either from nobody, from everybody, or pertinent here: "Only from list".

I then add all the people I want to be able to call me to that list. If they call, they connect. If anyone else, including unknown or withheld numbers, call they just get cut off (a dead tone) as I don't take voicemail.

We have Caller ID enabled on the landline. What I was hoping to find out is which landline handsets have this feature.

According to BT, none of their handsets have this. According to Philips, some of theirs have a "Do Not Disturb" feature which doesn't disconnect the caller, but rather, gives a ring tone even though the handset doesn't actually ring, which is almost there.

Can anyone else advise if they have a handset which does this and which one it is so we can go and buy it?

Thanks,
Mark

Do be aware that there are a vast number of types of call that you may want to receive that do not provide a number.

Hospitals and doctor's surgeries.
Many government departments.
Local authority departments.
Companies who may try to call you back after you have phioned them.
People using, for example, call1899 where you may or may not get a number depending upon how the call was routed.

It's odd that you did not get any benefit from registering with TPS.

Everyone I know who's registered with them has found that it's stopped all nuisence calls, bar those from sequential dialers, dead.

This isn't a problem - if people don't send their caller ID I am more than happy for them to be unable to get through.

I point this out to companies when I give them our number (if I have to, which I don't generally do), and ask what number they will call me from. If they cannot or will not say, then I inform them I won't be contactable by phone.

People who can't contact me phone can always write to me or email me.

The latest nuisance is a debt collection agency who believe that a Jennifer Smith lives here and keep calling for her.

The mobile solution is a really neat one which just kills this problem dead.

BT have a Premium Call Feature called Anonymous Call Reject, but it costs £4 a month.
If a caller withholds their number, they will not be able to get through to you. They will only be able to get through if they reveal their number. Anonymous Call Reject will not bar incoming calls where it delivers the message 'unavailable'.

On NTL I used to be able to do this. Switchable with 1478/1479. Years ago. Free. BT haven't caught up!

No, but Virgin Media have: it's no longer free and is now a chargeable feature from them too.
