Has anyone ever been to one of these places which you see around the West End of London? If so are they as bad as their reputation makes out?

As a Londoner I felt I ought to give them a go. Not going back........

I'm amazed there still there, they're in prime postions, never more than a 3rd full, if you owned one/them you would do something else..

I've seen it suggested they are some sort of front for organised crime!! Anthony Bourdain visited one and his verdict was it was about as bad as you can get.

There are so many places you can get a decent steak in London that I wouldn't set foot in one personally!

I haven't eaten in one of these and don't intend to either *shudders at the thought of it*

Tee - Hee.

An Ex of mine wanted to go on his birthday as a naff day out. It was gross. Canned mushrooms, frozen chips, heavy gross sauces and do not know meaning of rare.

The best bit was when we ordered pints and they gave him a tankard and me a lady pint wine -esq glass. We swapped.

Steak is better at home, you can spead more on a better piece of meat and then have it as blue as you want.

Yes they're as bad as is made out. In fact no, they're far worse. Avoid like the plague.

Only ever been in one once; it was ok. The thing that annoyed me is that they automatically added on a "service" charge AND a "cover" charge; I've never come across that before.

That's why we've never been in. We just thought it was a total rip off for tourists.

Added on service charges are quite normal, they are nearly always discretionary though. The cover charge is more of a continental thing.

Cover charge seems to be coming pretty common here as well now - normally used an excuse to charge for the likes of bread and olives.

I am ok with added service charge as long as it goes to the staff, and not the management's profits!

Yes I know, but it's the only place I've ever been to where BOTH a service charge AND a cover charge have been added to the bill.
