Is there a way to indulge in chips whilst on a diet?
I adore chips especially the chip shop variety but feel that if I scoff them whilst on my diet I will fall off the diet wagon

I follow weightwatchers so as long as I count them into my daily allowance I can have a bag of chips - they're just under half my allowance so you can imagine I have to starve for the rest of the day which isn't ideal.
So in a nutshell, as long as you watch what else you eat for the rest of the day, go ahead and have some. |

Make your own chips and crisps in the oven. Very tasty and healthy for you as you can drain the excess fat off.

Can't you just have chips from the chippy once a week.

Absolutely, a portion once a week will do no harm, otherwise, do oven chips and have a small amount. I have them every week, am 5'6'' and only weigh 8 stone 9lbs, so no excess there. I love my food but I always eat in moderation, which I think is the answer to everything. Then I have the calories left for a glass of beer at lunch and a couple of glasses of vino at supper!!!

![]() What do other dieting folks do? Any diet where you can't have the occasional treat is doooooooooomed to failure. Another thought - our local chippy does small bags of chips, too, so if yours does or they have a kiddy-sized portion, that would be even better for salving your conscience, while enjoying some lovely chips. Though if you're only having them as an occasional treat, you shouldn't even feel guilty about it. |

There are plenty of low fat variety oven chips out there! The trick is to have a small-ish portion and make sure the rest fo the meal is pretty healthy (IE grilled chicken breast and a big salad to go with said chips!!)

End of the day, there is no such thing in a diet that works. Because when you "finish" your diet you'll go back to eating what made you overweight in the first place. Get your food habits sorted out now and for the rest of your life and exercise. Forget all diets. Weightwatchers and other such organisations, as all businesses, exist for one reason and one reason only - to make money. |

I read in the Guardian that adding vinegar to chips makes them a tad easier to digest. Not sure if that's true, but you've got nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Er, poor choice of words there.

The chips would be a bad thing if they were a spur of the moment splurge, as then you might think 'blown it now, may as well eat ten easter eggs too'. But if you planned you were going to have a small portion for tea this Friday with a side of salad, and have a light-ish lunch, that could work.
I like making my own chips or wedges using a potato and come olive oil, but nothing quite beats chip shop chips ![]() Personally I don't believe in 'diets', but healthy eating plans. If you burn off more calories than you consume then you will lose weight, fact. If you can't stick to a diet/healthy eating plan forever, then you will put the weight back on. Presuming that you can't live without chips forever, you just need to find a way to accomodate them into your healthy eating plan. |

Its best to have chunky chips rather skinny chips as chunky chips absorb less fat.

That's a silly rule. Saturated and hydrogenated fats are never, ever good for you, so why eat them in moderation.

syn free chips from slimming world are gorgeous.
Serves: 4 (if you're feeling generous!) You need 2lb/908g medium sized Maris Piper potatoes Fry Light spray Crushed sea salt and malt vinegar [optional 1. Preheat the oven to 240°C/475°F/Gas 9. Peel the potatoes using a potato peeler and remove any blemishes or 'eyes'. Slice lengthwise into approx ½in/1cm thick rectangular chips. 2. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the chips and cook for 4 minutes. Drain and leave aside for 10 minutes to dry. 3. Return the chips to the dry saucepan, cover with a lid and shake to 'rough up' the edges of the chips - this roughness is important to the texture of the chips. 4. Spray a metal baking tray with Fry Light. Transfer the chips to the tray, spray lightly with Fry Light and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides. Drain them on absorbent kitchen paper and serve with salt and vinegar. Nutrition information (per 8oz/227g cooked) Slimming World chips Fat: 0.9g Cals: 170 Chip-shop chips Fat: 28.1g Cals: 545 i prefer them to chip shop chips.
