What with all the hype recently, I've just tried the Audio Description service (not that I need it at present, but after what my optician told me recently, you never know).

I managed to change my 9200TBX to play the AD soundtrack but lost the normal soundtrack in doing so.

I'm pretty sure that AD should have both soundtracks mixed together (and I'm surprised that this is not what the AD soundtrack already consists of).

How do I get a mix of AD and normal soundtracks as I believe is what's supposed to happen?

You can't on the Humax. Very few boxes support AD.

A neighbour of my mother's at their sheltered accommodation switches on the kitchen telly, turned up loud, and puts the AD on the lounge TV.

AFAIK the VBox from Virgin has proper AD.

AD is sent in two different ways.

The BBC use "user mix" where the user's AD capable STB (very few of them) allows the second mono AD stream to be mixed into the main stereo audio. This is the near perfect solution as each individual is different and he/she can get the right balance of the two to suit them. It also saves on bitrate as the AD stream is around 70kbs.

Other broadcasters use "broadcaster mix" to send a second full audio stream with the AD commentary mixed in by them. This is arguably the worst option as the balance is not adjustable by the user and it will never be right for most users! It's possibly only advantage is that the user doesn't need a special AD capable STB.
