I do get my service via cable and touch wood, I haven't had too many problems with it. I use ethernet cables and a Netgear router.
I couldn't go back to a non cable service, unless they decide to dig up the road and sort out the stupid phone lines around here. When I had a dial up via a bt line, I kept complaining about my phone being noisy and being disconnected from the internet. They insisted nothing was wrong with my line, until I finally found one sympathetic person who sent out an engineer. He heard my line and said it was very dirty. He was outside messing about for ages and finally knocked my door and told me my phone line was under around 3ft of water.

The road still hasn't been done, so the problem would still be the same, so I told them I wouldn't be coming back until they sorted it out. That was over 5 years ago.
As for the cost of a 50mb speed, we shall have to see what they set the price at, but with everything going up (and I now see the water bills are going up now), I doubt I will be able to afford to blow my nose, at this rate.
