Can anyone please tell me the procedure for connecting an ipod touch to wi-fi....

It all seems a bit vague. Any help would be appreciated...

First question to ask is does your wireless router hide its SSID? If not it's very straight forward:

Goto Settings on your Touch
Then WIFi
Turn Wifi On
If your SSID is publicily broadcasted then the Touch will 'find' the network then you simply select it and enter the password.

If your SSID is hidden from public view select 'Other' where it says 'Choose a Network...'
Then enter the relevant WiFi network name and password and select Join

So basically you're saying I need to go wireless. I have a wireless router but I'm not wireless at the moment.....

Eh?

You mean you have a wireless router but the wireless functionality is turned off I assume?

In which case, yes, you need to switch it on.

How else did you think the touch was going to connect???

I've got a wireless router but haven't got the adaptors you need. I've always had the option to go wireless or not.

You don't need to pose a question as though I'm some sort of retard you know because I'm far from it......

Sorry, maybe it's me (wasn't implying mental deficiency in any way!), but I'm completely lost here!

What adapter?

If you have a wireless router, transmitting a wireless internet signal, you connect the touch to it. What adapter do you need?

Yeah just to back sancheeez up, you don't need a Wireless adaptor of any kind to connect the Touch to wi-fi, it has one built in. All it needs is the signal from the wireless router.

Technically, if you have a wireless router, you ARE wireless, your just not using it. You dont need any adapters or such like to go wireless, you only need an adapter to pick up a wireless signal.
Not if your using an IPOD touch though.

I have a wireless router but it's connected to my PC by cables. I bought it specifically so I could connect my Touch to it, and it works great. If, at some point in the future, I get a laptop, I'll simply need to get a USB connector for the lappy to pick up the wireless signal.

Connecting the Touch was a piece of cake! It found the wireless signal, asked for the router's password and bingo! And it remembers the password too, so you only need to put that in the first time you connect, unless you change the password for the router.

thanks everyone for the advice.

I've joined a network but it's padlocked. Does anyone know why ?.......

That means the network is protected (as it should be!).

Never used a touch but, assuming it works the same as any other wireless device, all you should need to do it tell is what the password for the secure network is. It'll be a WEP or WPA key you'll need.

You'll get the password on your router configuration page (the vast majority of them use an Internet Explorer page at a default IP address to configure them).

I can't tell you how to find it as I don't know the model of router you're using or how it's currently configured.

When I set my wireless router up (belkin, can't remember the model tho), it wasn't initially secure (password protected) so anyone could have used it to access the net. The Touch found the unsecured network and connected automatically, no password required.

I went into the modem settings (10.90.blah.blah.blah - the exact details will be with the router's documentation) and set my own. Having done that, when I subsequently asked the Touch to find my wifi signal, I had to enter that same password to get access, and that was it.

ok, so my network is padworked.

I've got a WEP key code. Where on the ipod touch do I enter this code ?

i guess it's the same as my iphone, so: settings, wifi, tap on your network, and you will be asked to enter the password.

The padlock means that the network to which you are attempting to connect is password protected, which means that you enter the relevant password. Once this is done the padlock will remain becaused the access to the network is still password protected.

The only way to 'get rid of the padlock' is to make the network 'Open' (meaning it doesn't require a password) but this is really not advisable.

Have you actually configured a wireless network, or are you trying to get into somebody else's?

You have to set up a network first, give it a name, and password.
When it shows up on the itouch, you then enter your password to gain access.

Ok quick question to asve me time making another thread....

I have an I-Pod Touch that I would quite like to get connected to the wifi. I have nothing (Apart from a Nintendo Wi-Fi connector) to connect it to on my computer.

Can anyone recommend the cheapest/quickest way I can get onto it? thanks

Youre going to need a router mate. This converts your dsl connection to a wireless signal. Shop around but i should think you could get one for about £40.
