I understand that LLU offers companies the opportunity to have equipment in the local exchange, but how does this work, exactly? Is it equipement solely dedicted to my line, or a number of lines?

What are the costs involved in installing this equipment?

I live in a rural area, and so were unlikely to become LLU'd. However, is cost the only thing holding companies back? Just how unprofitable would LLU be to companies in rual areas?

I thought none of the other companies would bother with my small exchange too - but (unfortunately) Talk Talk did!

LLU equipment (i.e. a DSLAM) will typically provide service for many subscribers (upwards of 600 in the case of the stuff I deal with). The end-users' lines would be physically jumpered over to their own specific DSLAM port as and when they subscribe to a particular LLU's service. Voice can either be carried alongside the data through the DSLAM or split off back to BT depending on how the LLU operator has their network set up.

You're right that LLU operators tend to cherry-pick exchanges that are in densly populated areas which have a high number of potential users - and therefore offer a higher return on investment. As far as I can tell it's purely an economic decision. As well as the obvious cost of the DSLAM, LLU operators need to consider the costs and availablility of backhaul into their core networks aswell.

But surely (you don't mind if I call you that?) you are not obliged to use them?

Agreed - it's just that, probably, the (paid on a commission-only basis) cold call doorknockers will not be far behind.

"No", may not mean "no" to them particularly in respect of those who get talked into "sign here just to say I called".
