Sky and phone line

Just in the middle of moving house now the new house doesnt have a BT line and BT want £130 to reconnect so I told them to do one.

So i'm having cable as that is all ready to go. Now when canceling my sky for the move the women said that you dont need a BT line for SKY now according to the website it's the case.

So is the women at sky talking rubbish as it would be a new installiaion or did she just not want someone going to virgin.

For a single room installation, you can pay a 1 off fee of £25 so that you do not need to connect to a telephone line.

You still need a phone line for multiroom.

Please also note, you do not need a BT line, but a phone line for this (VM will do), you only need a BT line for Sky Talk or Broadband.

Confirm the above.

With just the TV any phone line will do, it doesn't have to be a BT one, never has. (We had Sky installed in Oct 1998 with a cable phone line).

It's only if you want Sky broadband or Sky Talk package you need a BT line.

You don't have to have a phone line for Sky if you pay the £25 no phone line fee. However this is for single box installs and not multi-room where you need a phone line (any provider).

Note: VM are expensive for phone call costs and unlike BT it is more difficult to save money on calls. I'd advise signing up to Call 18185 and using their cable access number for most calls - OK you don't get the same low rates you would if it was a BT line, but at least they are cheaper than VM. With a BT line you could have got evening and weekend calls for no extra cost, this is around £3.45 each and every month on VM.

Sky do offer to pay the BT installation charge if you tell them that is the sticking point, but not sure if that's if you also go for their broadband and free evening and weekend calls package.

As you are an existing Sky customer, the woman may have been refering to you not needing a telephone line as you are out of your 12 month contract (possibly?). Either way, a telephone line check is not enforced on a single subscription setup, so if you are wanting to 'move home' with Sky, just tell them you don't have the telephone line number yet, and you'll give it them when you do. You can then decide whether to bother or not.
