Soap Crossovers - Could it ever happen?
I know that there's a similar topic on this board doing the rounds (Soap Swap or whatever it's called), but this is something that I've been wanting to discuss on the board ever since I first came here.
Could it ever be possible that we could ever see characters appearing in different soaps? Like Kat Slater going on holiday and ending up in Ramsay Street? Or Traceyluv whoring it up round the Woolpack? The possibilities could be endless... I bet most people round here would love the idea, but unfortunately, there's always the problem of reality, TV channels, and the constraints of producing a soap, to come and bring the hammer smashing into our glass dreams. With the workload most soap actors face, sending them out to different locations time and time again would probably end up killing them! We ain't never gonna see co-operation between the BBC and ITV when it comes to their flagship soaps, so we can probably sink the idea of a Corrie/Eastenders crossover. Or any other cross-channel ones as well... And plus, there's the aesthetics of the soaps themselves. Would you think it would be credible and realistic to see the perpetually sun-kissed, cheery residents of Summer Bay stuck within the grey, languid misery of Albert Square? The constantly anti-depressant pill-popping Brodie wouldn't last a minute in the Queen Vic. Still, think of all the ratings such a thing could generate. Think of all the publicity a soap could get from it. Then again, I could see this as being the last-chance, desperate barrel-bottom scraping measure a soap's production team would take, providing they haven't gone to lowering the standards of morals and taste as low as they possibly can in their storylines and writing (How far have they gone down now, though?). Crossovers happen all the time in American serial dramas, and their ratings seem to be pretty good... Maybe soap crossovers could be a reality, but for now, they'll be nothing more than fantasy.... What are your thoughts on this? |

Well not in original character obviously, but the "in" place to end up when you leave a soap is as a character in The Bill.

It has happened - certanly characters from Brookside and Hollyoaks have swopped brieftly between the two for the occasional scene - for instance Brookie characters being seen around Chester.
One Brookside character did 'swop' - Matt Musgrove, who was in Brookside with his family, then when they got written out, he disappeared for a while then went to Hollyoaks, where he still is. |

and didn't the plane crash in Emmerdale get mentioned in the newspapers in Brookside. I know it's not a character swap but it was an attempt to bring them into the 'real soap world'

I wouldnt be surprised if any other characters from Brookside jumpship over to Hollyoaks or Grange Hill even, when it finishes soon.
I'm glad that the brookside cameos in Hollyoaks were deliberate, cause the first time I saw Mike Dixon walk into shot during an episode of 'oaks i thought "god, what amateurs. He's just wandering the set and noone noticed." Didnt Mrs.Harvey from Crossroads appear in Brookie as 'a hotel owner'? The Dingles met Reg Holdsworth when they visited Venice didnt they? |

OMG i didn't know Mike had made an appearance in Hollyoaks.I can remember an example of Hollyoak characters appearing in Brookie though. It was when Jacqui was pregnant with Harry, and Max and Susannah were getting married again in Chester. They walked onto a bridge or something over looking water, and Terri Dwyer (and someone else whom i can't remember) were standing chatting beside a wall. |

I remember reading about the possibility of Corrie & Emmerdale having some crossovers. After all, both are made by Granada

The Granada Empire
Would be quite funny to have crossovers, you could imagine Ashley and Fred nipping of to Andys Farm to pick the meat what they want to buy. Or Shelly popping down to Emmerdale for some pub retrainging. Or Betty Eggleton popping upto manchester and bumping into old friend Rita. Or on Eastenders, Dennis shoots phil, *Knock Knock* Sharon * Can I help you? COP 1 " I'm DCI Meadows and this DS McCalister from Sunhil, can we have a word with Dennis please, Cop 2 to Cop 3 "you search the property" Cop 3 to Pauline "alright, Mam, how you doing" Pauline to Cop 5 "Oh Mark, what you doing here, I thought you were dead" Hehe, sorry was not very funny. |
