Am I the only one who always feels uncomfortable watching Amy Whinehouse sing....she sort of does thing strange dance and I cant work out if she is thinking ok I will a little dance and then sorts of gets bored of that...and sort of stumble around.

However her voice is amazing but she just worrys me as a person..

It was at its worst at the brits last night, the way she was staring into the camera...i thought she was trying to blink a message to Blake or something..and then I swear she mouthed I love you..or something...

I just find her odd to watch...

She comes across to me like the kind of singer who has absolutely no idea what to do while singing so just ends up doing a kind of 'Grandad at Wedding' dance

Some singers are just great at knowing how to move when they are singing, others just never get the right thing.

Woah there arent we brave for saying this? I'm expecting to be stoned for speaking out.

I said the exact same thing this morning in work!

Gifted girl but a total mess and as for her getting over her drug problems like everyone seems to be being saying it just didnt look the case last night at all.

I was scared she was going to show her lady garden ha ha

And I'm sorry to say many people have only jumped on her band wagon 'cos it appears to be cool to be off ya face as long as your a celeb... and not the hungry and homeless kinda druggie

The way she "danced" reminded me of a six year old desperate to go to the toilet!!

What voice?

She sounds like a black gospel singer in her vocal tone.

Does annoy me that both Adele and Amy get praised for this.

Limited vocal range, limited dynamic range.

Realistically, Beverly Knight is a better singer with the same sound but does not get the recognition because she is black.

Beverley Knight is in the upper echelons of British vocalists, not some messed-up publicity seeker more fit for the pages of Heat than Mojo.

BK did have a rather successful album fairly recently (Voice) and a rather less recognised one (Music City Soul) both of which Amy could do worse than emulate.

This has nothing to do with skin colour! For me it's not just about the voice but about the material. Wino's Back to Black is an amazing album IMO and simply better than anything Beverley has produced.

eh?

now I understand why we disagree during XF

Wino is not fit to lace Bev's high boots.

I have all of BKs album back-catalogue and I can't think of a duff album anywhere along the way - B-Funk, Prodigal Sista, Affirmation, Music City Soul etc etc - and Beverley is actually capable of performing to a high standard when she tours. she's a class act whereas Wino acts like trash and is completely unprofessional.

no contest - BK wins hands down.

Well, that's your opinion. I'm not knocking Beverley...she's very talented and I'm sure she hasn't made a duff album but her music's just not particularly memorable for me...but then I don't own her whole back catalogue.

Wino's pretty unique on the modern music scene. Although I agree, she does act like trash...I'm not disputing that.

Did we disagree during XF? I pretty much thought they were all a bunch of talentless losers this year.

I just seem to remember your posting name and thought we'd disagreed - perhaps it was Toxic Bunny I was thinking of.

as for XF, nobody really great emerged. shame about the ageism though.

I agree - Amy just has so much talent, both in writing and porformance. Nothing against BK (I don't think they are comparable artists anyway) but Amy has the makings of one of the truly greats. Not sure if I would say that about Beverly, good as she is.

Her performances last night were absolutely awful . The first was bad enough, but then they let her back on the stage by herself! She was out of time, out of tune and what was with the weird dance and clutching at her skirt!! It was so cringleworthy - I was mortified for her!

I absolutely agree, and was beginning to think that I was the only one who thought that. Don't get me wrong I love Amy Winehouse and think she has amazing talent. Ok, so she isn't blessed with the same vocal range as Leona, Celine and Whitney etc, but in her own way she is very talented and her song writing abilities are superb. Her performance last night though was cringeworthy and whoever's idea it was for her to be there wants shooting IMO.

She clearly isn't well enough yet, and even though she has brought her illness on herself, I did feel sorry for her and sincerely hope she manages to beat her demons and gets back on top where she belongs.

I've watched her performance three times today and I think she is fabulous - I guess we all see things differently. As for comparing her with the shrieking divas , forget it - they are completely different styles. her singing is all interpretation and emotion and telling the story of the song, not trying to hit the highest, loudest notes. She reminds me so much of Billie Holliday in this performance

I wasn't comparing her to the shriking divas, I just said she didn't have the same vocal range (which she hasn't). I much prefer her to any one of them. And yes, she is fabulous, and I've been to see her in concert, so I'm not totally disagreeing with you, just saying that at the moment she is very much below par and would just like her to get better and perform like we all know that she can do.

Fair enough, but I think it's her fragility and fallibility that is so much a part of who she is as a person and as an artist.
Every time she sings a song live she does it slightly differently as though she's telling the story for the first time. Even when she's under par she's better than most. Not much great art gets produced out of emotional stability - it's sad but true.

Thanks for your great post Reality sucks.

You see this is exactly what makes me wonder about the talent people are talking about. I am much older and a member of the school of music that sang blues, jazz, soul, folk etc. I put on records of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simon. To be honest she has sort of mimic some of these singers. So for me its not original, its not new. But what they have done is re-packaged it as pop. It does work for a lot of people who think its original. Now I am not saying she is not talented-she is but like most of the music this century its all about "sound like", "the next", " cross between" and "throw back"which I do not buy.

I could also say the same for Leona who sounds like Whitney (Mini me) or Mariah and people think it is original. She is talented but I do not want a copy. I have it all on record.

For a lot of you who would disagree with me. I think we would have to agree to disagree. Am I showing my age ?.

Have a nice evening.

I'm no spring chicken myself and I have Nina Simone and Billie Holliday in my collection as well as younger artists. I tend to like artists who put their life experience and soul into their performance and I don't see Amy as a soundalike for anyone who's been before. Just her intensity and emotion of her delivery puts me in mind of some of those great performers from the past. She writes her own material and is her own person. She's not a copy of anyone.

As for Leona, she just doesn't do it for me on any level, as a soundalike or as an original artist.

I think she is a great singer, Back to Black is a brill album, one of my favs from 2007

But last night, I forgot to say what was up with her pulling her dress up, I couldnt work out what she was going to do, I thought she was going to have "Blake incarcerated" shaved into her lady garden or somthing....

i was a bit worried as to what she was trying to do and then she just moved on from the dress pulling up...

that said she has a amazing voice

I just think she does what she feels like doing - she's a very nervous performer and also quite shy (I don't think she likes speaking to the audience). I just think of it as part of her eccentricity and of course her nerves will be shot to bits because of rehab. She did well to appear I think. The Grammy's must have given her a boost of confidence.
