I had a similar problem with my Ipod Photo and some chappy on here told me to listen to it to hear if it made a whirring sound (indicating a jammed hard drive). Then, drop it on carpet from about 3 feet high and voila! It works! I kid you not. Check back on the threads about 6 months ago if you're unsure but it really does work.

If not it may be savable. On my wifes 40 gb 3g pod we thought it was scrap but there was no clicking noise just a wirring and it occured to me that maybe the HD was just stuck? So I dropped it from a height of about 3-4 feet onto CARPET. Picked it up and it worked first time.

May be worth a try? Unless of course you are just looking for an excuse to power-buy a new one.”

I had a similar problem with my ipod and decided to take it to the apple shop (the place i purchased ipod from) and it was only two weeks old i may add. Anyway they confirmed in there way that i had the "clicks of death" and replaced the unit, and to my surprise when apple swap your newly purchased unit, (its in the small print of your receipt) to swap it for a unit that is made from reconditioned parts!!! So beware and purchase your ipod from anywhere but an apple shop, as you dont want to end up with a second hand unit do you! Apple...what a bunch of tubes! ... im very unhappy ... £159 for a second hand unit, what a bargain.

Actually it says you may get a new or refurbished replacement. Is there anything about your replacement iPod that screams out second hand. When our daughters 80GB got replaced the new one looked identical to one out the box.

I doubt apple actually refurbish iPods to be honest its not worth it and it is quite difficult to prise the case open and leave no evidence.

Alot of the "refurbished" units are often just ones returned under their 14 returns policy - or ex demo units used in the stores!

Also, all refurbished iPods are given a new serial number - which is engraved onto the back of the casing - because of this they're always given a new case - is why they always look brand new
