Hi Guys, I wonder if anyone can help me with bit of a prob. im having with my dvd's.....

I have been using my LG dvd recorder for the past few months. Using philips dvd-r disks. they play back ok on the LG recorder and the panasonic player downstairs.

but on my bush dvd player, they keep freezing just a minute into it. so i thought it was just dodgy old player and went and brought a new matsui dvd player.... exactly the same.

But when I playback films I recorded onto poundland dvd+r's they work fine.

Any ideas anyone?

It's just an incompatibility of the disks with your equipment, find disks that work and stick with them. Generally quality brands such as Verbatim are better.

do you think I would stand a better cance of Verbatim DVD-R's or DVD+R's, being as all the -r disks I have tried has frozen up so far?

ps. thank you for your help!

I don't have your recorder but I can say that I use Verbatim -Rs and have never had a single failure (out of a couple of hundred).

Unless anybody here who has your recorder can give specific advice then all you can do is try different brands - buy a small sample rather than a big batch at first.

Ive brought myself some verbatim dvd+r's and they seem to work fine on all the devices in my home. They probably wouldnt play in some older players, but I can live with that.

Funny thing is, I burnt some films on the philips dvd-r's using my PC, and they play fine on my bush dvd player. (the same discs freeze if i use my dvd recorder to create them. wtf!)

Do you not have to go to menu with some dvd recorders and mark as play on all dvd players? Some machines may be set up automatically to do this (eg. your pc) and some have to be selected.

I had transfered all videos of kids onto dvd using mother in laws combi but it wouldn't play on my panasonic dvd player!

Apparently I should have selected from menu first, I thought panny would play any sort. Going to get dvd recorder with hdd and freeview at some point and switch everything then.

Not all was lost as mother in law got dvd's of kids growing up!!

I've got an LG DR175 DVDR. I've never had a problem with any DVD+R discs from any manufacturer. I have had some problems with both cheap and expensive DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs (not always, sometimes works fine, other times looks like it works fine then doesn't play on other DVD players). So, I stick to DVD+Rs. Maybe the LG's aren't as good at recording on -R/-RWs as they are on +R/+RWs.

Hi broadz. cheers for your reply.

do you record in "VR Mode" or "Video Mode"

The manual says that it will record in Video mode by default on dvd-r and dvd+r, but I can only seem to get it to record in VR Mode.
I have heard however, that video mode is more reliable - cause its the standard they use for shop brought dvd's.

Im starting to wish I stuck to vhs now!

Video mode is what you should use for maximum compatibility. What happens if you try to record in video mode?

I cant find how to change it to video mode on a dvd+r disk. It automaticaly uses VR mode. the user guide doesnt make it clear wether its actually possible.

If I put a DVD-R disk in, it records on video mode. but these disks seem to keep freezing on my dvd player(s).

Just a thought, you are finalising these disks?

yeah, I am doing. thanks tho.

its strange..... the dvd-r disks play fine on my panasonic dvd player........ but the dvd+r disks freeze up about once every minute.

but on my other dvd player (its a bit older), its the exact opposite. the +r's play fine.... but the -r's freeze up in the same way.

maybe some players just prefer one or the other!

also, I've just done a bit of an experiment.....

A lot of people online say that ps2's cant read dvd+r disks........ well they play fine in mine. they dont even freeze up like they do in my expensive dvd player.

actually its the only thing player in my house that plays everything fine!

(Id use it but I cant stand the noise of the fan while watching a film!!!)

cheers ghostleader - I seem to have much much more luck with +r disks

altho considering everyone raves about these verbatim disks - I havent found them particularly reliable in terms of reading / writing errors and failed finilazations!

It's all about finding the best brand for your particular machine. This is of course complicated that sometimes the same brand can have different manufacturers in different batches. I have a 100% success rate (other than my own stupidity) with verbatim in my Panny, that doesn't mean you will with your LG.
