For me its British all the way.

America has produced some fine musicians in the past but now it's all RnB drivel like S**lja B*y. IMO, British music continues to innovate and evolve- it's not just indie and Winehouse.

To reprise the thread title- which do you prefer? American music or British music?

Me I loved old brit rock but at the moment our rock sucks but the US do have some great kick ass bands that are not well known over here.

So for me I would have to say US music.

But I do see where you are coming from with what is in the charts today. But for me the charts mean jack as most of it is crap IMO UK or not UK.

America. QOTSA, Rage, Foos. It's a lot better bandwise.

Who do we have? Boring old Radiohead, Kaiser Chiefs.

No thanks

We do have Muse though

I generally prefer British music in general, but American music is far, far superior right now in terms of rock music to me because it actually has a large amount of legitimate mainstream rock bands if you are willing to wade through the crap (the crap IMO is emo, metalcore and pop punk). I think American bands are far more innovative at the moment in the mainstream - there is no popular British band at the moment like the Mars Volta, for one example. I also think bands like the Strokes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are a lot superior to nearly all British indie bands and far less up their own arse.

I think both American and British genres/innovations since the 1980s are a hell of a lot better when they're more obscure or underground, because when they become mainstream they become a lot more diluted and turn into fads.

That made me LOL!

The girls are starting to sound the same, all very "london", camden town. All the bands have names starting with "The", they look the same, they sound the same.

Neither, if I like a band, I like a band, regardless of what country they are from.

However, I do try to check out as many British bands as I can.

Why are people obsessed with UK/US music? there are some great swedish bands like The Movements,BWO and Alphabeat and great bands all over the world like The Fumestones from Spain.

I prefer british music because it is more raw and less polished. Also American rock is in dire straits atm! same old country/rock or metal!

My favourite act is the Jimi Hendrix Experience - a black American teamed up with two British white guys. 'White' America wasn't interested until he was re-exported as a 'British' act.

in those circumstances, it's got to be 'both', even though many of my faves are British.

wrong way round.

also - R&B - what contemporary American is better than Beverley Knight? nobody.
OK so Stax, Atlantic and Motown were great labels, but that was THEN, not NOW.

American music, without a doubt!. Nearly all of my CD's are by american artists. I like alot of pop rock and the USA is best for that. The UK's tried to do the american style pop rock, but it's never really worked, with the exception of feeder. The UK's better with indie style bands.

Recently, I've been preferring American Rock to British.

Battles - Mirrored
The National - Boxer
Blonde Redhead - 23
Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
Low - Drums and Guns

are, IMO, some of the best rock albums from last year (all American).

I also prefer American films and TV shows.

They're just better at entertainment imo
