I was at the Biomechanical gig in Glasgow last night, unfortunately I was running a little late. However I did manage to catch two of the three support bands, both of which I hadn't heard of and to my knowledge unsigned. Given what I heard last night I will definitely be keeping an eye out for further gigs with Madman is Absolute.

Anyway I was just wondering, if anyone has found a new band to enjoy from a gig they attended?

I went to a gig in Glasgow for some band whose name I can't even remember now. The support band was a bunch of obnoxious lads from Manchester called Oasis, but of course like all good fans we were in the bar for most of their set.

Wasn't the famous gig which led to McGee signing them was it?

....the band's big break came in May 1993 when they were spotted by Creation Records co-owner Alan McGee. Oasis were invited to play a gig at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut club in Glasgow, Scotland, by a band called Sister Lovers, who shared their rehearsal rooms. They were given the opening slot and impressed McGee, who was there to see 18 Wheeler, one of his own bands, that night. McGee was so impressed by what he saw he signed the band to Creation four days later.

I vaguely remember Wheeler 18, but not Sister Lovers.....

Hey, props to you Tommy........that's quite a legendary gig to have attended........legend has it that loads of people have claimed to have been there subsequently, once Oasis had gone on to be one of the biggest bands on the planet.........

Yeah...it seems that King Tuts , a venue that holds a few hundred transformed itself into a Tardis that night to admit the thousands who now claim to have been there

I've been to many gigs and in the end prefered the support band! But have to mention Little Man Tate. Had gone to see the Stereophonics who at the last minute (15 mins before doors opened) called the show off. Little Man Tate stepped up and played a longer show and were brilliant - have been a fan ever since.

Also really like a band called Unkle Bob who were supporting The Proclaimers. Bought their album at the end of the gig and I never normally do that but I was so impressed.

I saw Emiliana Torrini supporting Gabrielle a few years back and in my opinion, Emiliana was far better than Gabrielle - hadn't heard someone producing anything like Emiliana before that gig and I've liked her ever since.

Black Crowes supporting Page and Plant at the SECC 1995....what a line up...lol

Nic Armstrong and the Thieves supporting Paul Weller were excellent, so good I went and bought their album the next day. The Dead 60's supporting the 'Phonics in Glasgow were good as well.

Several. The main one being KT Tunstall, whom I first saw supporting Joss Stone. Claire Toomey and Juliet Turner are a couple of others.

I appreciate that the support is not whom people have primarily come to see but I always give them a listen as you never know who you might discover, and it's annoying trying to listen with half the crowd behind you talking amongst themselves and paying no attention.

I never go into the support band. I sit outside with my MP3 player instead.

Life's too short to waste it listening to 30-40 minutes of stuff you're not interested in.

When I saw Green Day at the Milton Keynes Bowl in 2005, Hard Fi were one of the support bands and I really liked them so remembered their name and then a few months later I brought their first album which they had just released

Back in the day, [yes I am over 40] I was treated to a concert ticket for my Birthday, and the band were Mott the Hoople. They had a few hits and were on Top of the Pops a lot, so it was quite a nice present. Also it was the first gig I had ever been to.

The support band for them was a little known outfit named "Queen."
Boy was I glad we arrived early enough to see them!! As you know they went on to become a bit popular!

But how do you know you're not interested if you can't be bothered to listen to them? What's the harm in listening to the first two or three songs-you may very well uncover someone interesting and if you decide you don't like them you can always go back outside again-which,whilst I usually give them a listen (as I said earlier),I'll admit to doing on a few occasions.

I don't know if it counts on this thread but I feel privileged to have been a customer at the "Naked Turtle" (yes, that's what it's called) restaurant in East Sheen, Surrey, for some years and to have heard waitressing jazz singer Victoria Hart long before she was spotted and invited to the Cannes Film Festival to entertain the celebs last year. I thought she was special...

Universal signed her and gave her a £1m record deal there and then!

Not really a support band, but at Liverpool's Matthew Street Festival I was waiting for the Aeroplanes to come on the 2nd stage, and before them was a band called Rebbeca.. they became my favourite band over the next couple of months and I even do work experience with their manager now!

some friends of mine must have seen the same tour - Queen as support for Mott The Hoople.

all you young dudes, eh?

I am only 2 bands away from Queen - I played with somebody who played with John Deacon!

If I had taken that view, then I wouldn't have found this new band or given the respect to those support bands that were willing to play (sometimes for pittance/nothing). I'll admit now that the ticket on Thursday was £7, I can bet those support bands played for nothing to get the exposure.

Its surprising really that you have this view, most bands/artists will have support from someone with a similar style/sound. Your hardly going to have Kate Nash supporting Iron Maiden at Twickenham are you? Or maybe you've seen Babyshambles supporting Celine Dion?

Or Deacon John as his name appeared on the sleeve of the first album!!!! Can I have your autograph?

It was the done thing to miss the support band though, but I'm so glad I didn't subscribe to that!

And often at gigs Ive been to in the past, the support has been better than the headliner.
I think it's a shame if people don't support the support act.

I see from your location that you are in Staffs - don't suppose you know whether Stafford Bingley Hall is still there?
That was a big rock venue in the 70's/80's.
I saw many bands [plus support acts there] - it was like an aeroplane hangar in the middle of a field.
Just wondered if it was still providing musical memories now or if it's been flattened and turned into a housing estate or Tesco or something?

Just reminiscing, here. Be kind.
