Help with DVD widescreen display on widescreen TV
FangRock
23-02-2008
Hello, I could do with a bit of help getting the correct display on my TV (Onn, 28" CRT Widescreen).

A widescreen signal (via scart) from my Virgin Media digibox works perfectly.

Output from my DVD player (via scart or component) displays incorrectly.

With the TV zoom set to auto, the picture displays in the correct aspect ratio, but too small (black bars on all 4 sides). Zooming to 16:9 only stretches the pictuture horizontally (black bars remain at top and bottom.

A 4:3 DVD (like Red Dwarf) displays correctly.

I hope someone can help me with this. I have included a picture below to help explain what I mean.

Have you told your DVD it is connected to a 16:9 TV?

It looks to me that it thinks it is connected to a 4:3 TV and is letterboxing a widescreen picture into a 4:3 frame and passing that on to the TV without setting the widescreen switching signal on the SCART.

To be honest, I'm not sure how to do that. I have a video iPod that acts in exactly the same way and it is definitely set to widescreen (rather than 4:3).

There will be a setting in the menu system for the DVD player itself. There should be a Configuration or Installation option with a setting for TV Type or something very similar.

I've come here with the same problem - my LG DR175 displays as described by FangRock, despite being told in Setup that TV is 16:9.

I can't even zoom via the DVD player, although I can zoom via the TV to a variety of settings (14:9, 16:9, Full Screen, etc), but none of them retain the proportions of the original.

It's driving me nuts

Is this when playing back all DVDs (including commercial DVDs, not just ones you have recorded yourself)? And, are you connected to your TV via scart rather than via component.

Component doesn't autoswitch, DVDs you have recorded yourself do not pick up the widescreen flag (from Sky or Freeview) when recording, even though the anamorphic widescreen picture itself is recorded, so you have to manually switch your TV to 16:9 mode to watch the DVD back in the correct aspect ratio.

The model numbers of both the DVD player and WSTV would help.

DVDR = LG DR175 connected via PVR to...

CRT TV = Daewoo DUB2850

It's not just DVDs (though I'm only playing DivX at the mo) but also the TV channel display that's too small.

I'm connected via SCART, and have tried several routes for the cable.

Thanks for replies
