On topic I once had a Aiwa that for some reason took ages to read the disc , was very annoying

yes Thats Rigt Take Agers to Line up the Disc and Did you Find Ever time you hand a Power cut you had to Re tuen the Radio

I've got one of those Aiwa ones that has the 3 disc tray. The only problem the tray keeps rotating when you eject it, so you have to be quick at inserting or removing a disc

I'm sure I've heard/read somewhere that Aiwa is a division of Sony.

i used to have an old panasonic, was good actually!

now i have a teac reference 100...bloody brilliant!

and my main system is an arcam amp and technics cd and deck

technics = panasonic = matsushita

No problems with the radio if the power went but yes lining up the disc was a big problem!

I've got a sony Pro-logic system i've had for about 3 years now. The sound quality is good, but I only use it as a glorified amp, as the laser on the CD player (3-cd changer) clogs up so quickly with dust. There's other CD-devices in this room which are fine, so i'm guessing the design of the unit just attracts dust. The tolerance on it was never very good anyway, as it would balk with some CDs anyway.

Plus, power cut and its set the clock time.

Incidentally, i unplugged my DVD player (a Panasonic) with a dvd in it at a specific point, and left it for about an hour whilst I moved my TV and stuff around. When I plugged it back in, I was most surprised that it remembered the point! I expected unplugging it to clear the memory, but it didn't!

So impressed I was!

I've taken DVDs out overnight after pausing what I was watching and even when I put in the DVD the next morning it still knew where I was , i only CDs players could do that!

resume is sooo good on dvd players, shame they dont all have it!

used to have a particularly 80's Amsrad CDX500 with lots of pink and green lines on and a very odd vertical load CD player. Unfortunately was damaged during many a drunken night at uni.
Thought it was great at the time but now realise the poor quality!

Not a hi-fi, but I've got a Ferguson VCR which totally drove me up the wall when I first got it. The PDC is so unreliable, it often begins recording just before the programme starts and then stops again about thirty seconds later. Thomson blamed the BBC's implementation of PDC and the BBC blamed Thomson for not using the "official" flavour of PDC.

Also, when recording it automatically switches to manual sound level - you can't leave it on Auto when you set the timer, which means some programmes are very quiet on playback. I phoned Thomson about this:

Me: "So is manual sound level the default?"
Thomson bloke: "No, it's not a fault. It's supposed to do that."

Roof-top. I've had the same problem at two houses, both in a good signal area. I think it's the VCR, but it is quite old now.

I've had problems with Amstrad equipment before - many months away for repair. I'm sure things are better now but it has put me off for good.

Worryingly, my JVC CD micro system won't play CDs and I know someone with the same model and the same problem, I'll give them a miss too!

Finally, I had to fix the eject mechanism on a Philips micro system with a rubber band, knew I went to college for something!

I used to have an old Pioneer 515 - nice machine (expensive - we are talking 1999), and that forgot where it was everytime you pressed the stop key. It had a "special" last memo function to make up for it, and it did more or less the same thing, but as with both the recent DVD players (Sony and Bush) I have used, I thought the normal Stop and Resume from same the place was standard by now.
