Reset after OTA download??
lunsfordc

Got my Hummy a few days back and have been playing with it ever since. Can't believe how many programs I've recorded already! Very pleased with everything. Of course there plenty of things/options that I don't fully understand yet, and some of them may eventually cause me problems. But for now I'm happy.

There was one confusing bit the other morning. I turned on the Hummy and was told that the OTA download was successful, and they recommended that I do a "Reset" to factory values, or some wording to that effect. I didn't follow through because it wasn't logical to get a new update....and then reset to factory settings. That seems like I would be rejecting the update!

Have I misunderstood? Should I have performed the Reset? Is this normal?

Advice please. Thanks,
Carlo

You really should do a reset to defaults. People that havent have reported some issues, including missed recordings. Once the reset is complete, you'll need to re-add all your recordings and set-up your favourites plus any other small changes that you have made.

Yes you have misunderstood. It would be good practice to perform the reset to defaults and I would suggest you do it now. It will reset the areas of NVRAM used to hold data to sensible values. The only way to revert to an earlier software version is to load it from a PC.

Your new machine probably came with the next most recent software, so the update (just a few bug-fixes) won't have changed much and a default reset is unlikely to be necessary. However, if you must, it's best to do it before you fill up the recording schedule or set up favourites lists, as these get cleared during the reset. That deterred me from doing it on the last couple of updates and I've not had any particular problems not suffered by users who have.

Just to clear up a point here, I think Simola means recording reservations. The recordings you have already made will be safely stored on the hard disk. This is mentioned in the user manual.

There are three separate "things" involved and it's important to differentiate correctly.

1) The firmware on the Humax - this is the code that controls the box and provides all the features. It's this that has been updated automatically for you.
2) The settings on the Humax, such as your recording schedule, favourites, video/UHF settings, etc. When (1) is updated, you're recommended to reset this to factory defaults. Reseting this doesn't affect (1) or (3)
3) The recordings on your hard disk. These aren't affected by updates to (1) or a reset of (2) You can remove them with a reformat but you shouldn't do this without good reason and updating (1) or reseting (2) is not a good reason!

I disagree with the advice quoted. Many users have reported weird problems following an update when they didn't bother to do a reset which seem to have been removed by subsequently doing a reset. There may well be others who didn't have any problems but IMHO you'd be better advised to grit your teeth and do the reset now (which will only require you to rebook your reservations and re-enter any personal settings) rather than find you need to do it because the box is behaving oddly.

Absolutely essential - do a factory/defaults reset NOW. You won't lose any recordings.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have done the reset and all seems to be fine.

Let me say how impressed I am with both my Hummy and this forum in particular. It's nice to know there is such a wealth of information and experience available right at our fingertips - and such speedy replies.

Thank you all,
Carlo
