I have the DMR-ES15 and have recently bought a PC. I have bought some T.Yuden DVD-R's to burn camcorder footage on and was hoping to them play them on the DVD recorder.
When the 100 spindle arrived from SVP the first thing I did was to put on in the ES15 to check it would read it- it did.
I then edited my footage and burned the AVI file on the PC to turn it into a DVD-VIDEO, which the ES15 manual says it should read.
Does ES15 however have a problem reading PC- recorded discs?
Since encountering this problem I have put in subsequent Yuden discs in the ES15. The first one I used to record something off the TV - it recorded but then started grinding and errored on the finalising.
Then next few then wouldn't even be read by the machine. Finally I got one to read, I took it out, put it back in and it didn't read the second time. Is it this disc brand that is the problem (I understand TY02 dye is one of the best though).
The footage is playable on two Sony machines and two Phillips machines I have tried the burned disc on. They also recognised the blank Yuden discs when put in.
I also tried another brand of -R disc which read the blank first time in the ES15 machine but after being burned on PC it wouldn't read saying "unsuitable format".
I have read on some forums that it may be worth opening up the ES15 and cleaning the spindle. It is out of warranty however as the PC burned software is the only major problem with it (save some U61 U88 errors occasionally) I'm not sure I want to risk destroying the machine if I don't put it back together right or damage the parts.
Help please. Should this player be recognising PC burned discs?

Hi Steve.

The ES15 in common with most other DVDR's depends on video being in the MPEG2 format. It cannot read AVI formatted files.
You need to use an authoring programme that will re-encode to MPEG2 [Be prepared for quality loss].



Actually TYG03 is the best but TYGO2 should be OK.
It should play OK.

I've just had feedback from a novice performing this process on an EZ27 whose machine was still under warranty. He reported the process as easy... and it worked.

Just to clarify the file was an AVI file in Windows Movie Maker and then it was turned into a DVD-VIDEO in Windows DVD Maker. I have checked its properties and it is in MPeg2. They also play on other DVD machines fine

So you're saying -
1) the ES15 should read a blank T.Yuden-R
2) it should also read the discs once I've burned them if I've saved them as MPEG2/DVD-VIDEO.
3) cleaning the spindle should hopefully sort it

I have got a relative to burn a DVD-R on their PC and it played fine on the ES15.
I looked up the disc info on Roxio Creator 9 LE and it says the disc is closed.
When I look up my T,Yuden burned disc it says the disc is open. Presumably this may be the problem. Why hasn't DVD maker closed the disc. Can it now be closed or should I try to burn my AVI file to DVD-VIDEO with another programme (any suggestions for free ones which don't leave a watermark). Roxio won't burn it as the AVI is far too big so I need something like DVD maker (which works though) which turns in into DVD-VIDEO before burning..

I haven't yet been brave enough to open up the ES15 to try to clean it but I did try a technique mentioned on the forums of using saliva on the disc which may clear the ES15 spindle up a bit. First disc inserted it read it as it did with subsequent ones.

Yes the disc has to be finalised on the PC before the Panasonic can view it.

I'd be very surpised if you can'y close it with DVD Maker.

Never used it myself as there is much better software available.


Confused why Roxio you say won't burn as the AVI is far too big? Is it just a demo version of Roxio? How big is the AVI file you are trying to burn to DVD.

Software wise, I suggest you have a look at www.videohelp.com for various software to try out.

Once the disc has been through Windows Movie Maker I choose the publish to DVD option which opens up DVD maker. I then create a DVD menu hit burn and it starts a hour long encoding process before ejecting it as a DVD-VIDEO (as it plays on two other players you'd have assumed it was all finalised).
It was only when I looked at the disc properties in Roxio that it shows it up as being "open". As I said, a relative burned a disc on his PC using Nero and when I look at that in Roxio it says it is "closed". This one played on the ES15.

I've had a look on a few forums and someone else has flagged it up as a problem that DVD maker doesn't close a disc. But they obviously still play on some players (as I found out) but not the ES15.
So as it stands, DVD maker is useless. No wonder it came free with the PC.

The AVI file is 1hr 4 mins of camcorder footage which has a file size of 24GB.
I can add the file into Roxio but if I try to burn it says the file is about 19 GB too big. So presumably it needs to be encoded to MPEG2 / DVD-VIDEO prior to the burning (which DVD maker does but doesn't close the disc!)
It is Roxio Creator 9 LE (which presumably stands for Limited Edition). Again it came with the PC.

Hi Steve... I was about to say that surely it would just be a case of finding a setting change to finalise the DVD in DVD Maker... but I see a search shows this to be a very big problem.

Yes - You are going to need some software which will encode to MPEG2 for laying onto a DVD.

Have a look at Videohelp... There is a huge amount of guidance and options there... plus, probably, links to freeware that will do the job.
