with home made oven chips i find it best to do wedges, i cut the potatoes par boil them and then coat them in alittle oil and any old herbs or spices that take my fancy at the time, then throw them in a hot oven for half a hour

Thank you,

Hopefully the kids will eat them, they wont eat normal oven chips.

I don't even par boil them. Chop em up, put on baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, a sprinkling of paprika and salt and bake for 40 minutes. They come out lovely and my kids love them!

I prefer them par-boiled, especially if they're cut chunky, BUT (this is important)
they should only be boiled 3 or 4 minutes, no longer, or they don't crisp up as well.

Er.. I could be missing something here but doesn't that make them roasties rather than chips

The original question was about OVEN Chips. The replies advise on the best home made method. Roasties are whole or large chunks of potatoes, chips are chip shaped perhaps?

They probably taste awful because you follow the instructions on the pack ie, place on tray and bung in the oven.
I use McCain Chip shop chips (or Homefries). I drizzle a few glugs of olive oil on a cold oven tray and then sprinkle a mixture of sea salt, black pepper, and garlic granules evenly over. I then chuck the chips in and with my hands toss all the chips until evenly coated. I then put them in a pre-heated oven at 200 fan for 35 minutes turning them halfway. I whack up the oven for the last 5-7 minutes and they come out as the best oven chips ever! Try it.

Sounds good - I'll try it at the weekend.

Well you can call them what you like BUT a par boiled potato that is finiahed off in the oven sounds an awful lot like a roast potato to me.

You're absolutely right. A potato that is par boiled and finished off in the oven is indeed a roast potato (or a roastie like you referred to earlier).

Or a roast potato wedge, or a roasted potato chip - dependant upon the shape in which you choose the cut the darned thing!

Does not the first frying of a chip (double fried is the correct method for chips) really only do the same as par boiling anyway? It is the second frying that makes it crunchy and golden

Is a crisp a crisp when it have been baked instead of fried or does it become an oven baked potato snack

Right I tried this last night, I did par boil them, and they didnt come out to great, but they were ok better than the oven chips that ive bought recently

Hubby did say they were ok and the kids ate them without complaining.

Next time will try them without par boiling.

I par boil for two mins then drain and leave to cool. Once they're cool, put a tbsp of flour (and whatever seasoning you're using) in the pan with them and shake vigorously to coat them and lightly smash the outer surface.

Next heat up your baking tray and oil to 200, once it's sizzling hot chuck in the wedges/chips and toss them a bit to coat and cook - the combination of cold going into hot oil gives a really crispy result (and works with roasties too!). Turn about 75% through cooking time.

Mmmm, wish I had some tatties in the house now

Cut some potatoes up and put them in the oven. Assuming you turned the oven on to a temperature of sufficient force to heat the potatoes, they will eventually go brown and soft inside.
