Help!
Hi all, new to all this VOIP stuff, I am going on holiday in May to the states and want a way to contact my wife's mobile if we get split up and also to call home to the UK, is a VOIP service the best (and cheapest) way to do this? I have a Nokia N95.
If all fails we could either pay a fortune to use the mobiles and roam networks or just buy US mobiles or sims. If VOIP is the way, any recommendations for someone who is not great at installing unless it's just click and go

Unless you can find a free wifi hotspot I would think the data charges for making a VOIP call over one of the American mobile networks would be pretty expensive maybe even more expensive than phoning your girlfriends phone as normal.

Yeah think the intention was for free wifi as I know my hotel has it.

Well you could sign up with Sipgate. It's a pay as you go type service, they give you a free UK geographic number you can choose which ever area code you want:
Calling a UK mobile number costs 9.9p/min Calling UK landlines costs 1.19p/min Plus people could call you from the UK for the price of a local call and you would save on the usual charges for receiving calls whilst roaming. Once you've signed up, log in, click help centre and select Nokia VOIP client from the drop down configuration menu on the right, this will give you all the settings you need to input into your phone. Sipgate say they've successfully tested their service with the Nokia E60/61, I would think the N95 set up will be the same/similar. http://www.sipgate.co.uk |
