Panasonic DMR-E55

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help ? We have a panasonic
DMR-E55 DVD recorder. The problem at the moment is that it has a habit of shutting itself down and then doing a self check. It happens at various times.

1. If you press the instant record button on the remote it will record for a while then turn off and go into self check mode.

2. If you start it to record with the instant record button on the machine it will do the same as above.

3. If you put it on timer it will record to the end of the time you put in then turn off and do a self check.

4. If you are watching something and recording something else it also does it.

This all happens some times and not others. I have disconnected the machine from the power to try a power reset and it behaves for a day or two then goes back to its old ways. After a power reset the self check is fairly fast.. when it starts to play up the self check takes some time to perform... but does not come up with anything.

Has anyone any ideas or experience of how this could be rectified ?

Thanks in anticipation ...

Hi Shoab

This problem was first discovered in the E85 ... but the E55 also suffers from it.

The culprit is a voltage regulator which is relatively cheap and easy to fix.

There are very extensive threads on how to deal with the problem... with guidance on how to do it your self ... or get help to do it.

See these two very large threads about the problem:

We have an E55 but haven't (so far) had this problem. However we do have the problem of when starting recording either on timer or instant, it will switch over to the programme about to be recorded, even if we are watching analogue when recording digital, or digital when we are recording analogue!

I have two 85 machines. One's PSU has completely failed. The other went to permanent self-check during a divide title operation. I have put the HDD (Samsung) from the failed PSU into t'other. I now have one working machine.

When the recorder starts to record it lifts pin 8 on the scart lead high and, if your tv has scart control, it will switch to the DVD input. It can be annoying but it is not a fault. Just switch the tv back to the channel or input you were watching.

If you can turn scart control off on your TV you can try that.
