wrong length of recordings
brms
28-02-2008
I'm getting a few recordings (CSI, Num3rs, and others) that show up as 59minutes long on the list, but when I start to play they come us something like 23 minutes. They play the full programme, but an ad skip will leap on about 3 or 4 minutes. Very disconcerting. Is anyone else having this porblem?

No, no I am not.

Hi

Yes, similar things happening here.

For example the program length on the playback bar says 1h 10 minutes, when it should be at least 1h 30, so you think you have lost 20 minutes or so, but it carries on playing past the 1h 10 mark.

It's just buggy firmware I'm afraid.

I've been expecting (hoping) this thread would appear. I get exactly the same problem now on every playback.

Strangely, although used daily I've only noticed it from about a week ago - but I guess it could have existed since the OTA V21 update.

It even happens on old recordings. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in the new program length it quotes. Its doesn't really affect anything that matters.

A possible explanation for this would be that the file system is becoming corrupt. The program length information is (I think) held separately. I would watch very closely for other signs of file system corruption (duplicate entries in the playlist, programs appearing under the wrong name, previously deleted programs reappearing) and if they occur you should reformat the disk (which will of course wipe out your recordings.

It's now happening a lot. The recording is all there, but the 1-minute skip jumps on too far and makes it unusable. Very odd.

I noticed this too while watching Al Murray. Once the clock got to 30 mins it stopped at 30.
Still got the whole programme so cannot complain too much.

Yesterday, I noticed that for some reason, I'd been recording BBC3 non-stop since the 26th Feb! It was just over 69GB and, when I FF'd x64, it seems to have not recorded anything at all when the channel was off-air.

I had a recording that showed at 00:03 run length in the playlist, however on playing it, it was actually a full hour. I seem to remember at the time stopping a second recording that was happening at the same time, so this may have messed up the times in some way... very odd. I reckon Humax have tried to squeeze so much functionality out of their software that perhaps more bugs have been introduced as a result - these little things are quite easily overlooked when testing - they probably only test the things that they have introduced as new.

Hi EVERYBODY who has posted above with the same problem, and the filesystem problems mentioned by Martin Liddle, can you please state whether you've frequently reset (power cycle off then on) the PVR since installing, V1.00.21, and which is the OLDEST version of firmware your machine had and which it was on the last time the HDD was formatted. Also if you've had the problem without resetting, or with only V1.00.21 installed give it a mention too. Thanks, and that just may tie down in which area lies the cause.

I installed the latest software, did a reset to defaults. I haven't switched off at the back since then, but not sure if I've put it in standby (I never do, but wife and daughter sometimes do). Never had the problem before. My box was bought September 2006.

Box came with .08, have upgraded via RS232 to .10, .15 and .20 as they became available. Downloaded .21 ota.

Power cycle only when the box seems to have a problem - usually HD running for no reason. Probably no more than 4 times in total to fix problems and a few times during rs232 software upgrades. Never formatted until after the problem mentioned above.

The file system seemed to be in tact. Just a huge 69GB file.
When I fast-forwarded, there were no long periods of black screen so box must have paused recording when there was no video stream.

I have seen one instance of this.

Stopped and restarted playback, and the correct duration was then displayed.

Thanks nvingo,

I originally said it doesn't affect anything that matters - wrong.
Yesterday mine wouldn't playback new recordings, so I powered off/on and every recording then disappeared from the list. I reformatted as Martin Liddle suggested. That allowed me to make one recording at a time not two !! For some illogical reason I decided to set to factory default settings which then got everything working OK again - except I've obviously lost all my old recordings. It makes me wonder if I should have just tried the default at the beginning of the problem.

Bought Oct 2006 with .06, updated OTA with .08, worked brilliantly, updated OTA with .021, no problems until a few days ago. I never reformat or power off/on.

I'll let you know if there are any further problems.

We've had several more instances of this problem so now trying disparately to get everything watched and deleted to do a reformat. We started of at 8, then moved to 10, 15, 21. Each time always doing a reset to defaults. First ever lockups came with 21!

There is something wrong with this firmware, I think we may drop back.

Finally got a couple of failed recordings, then duplicate entries in the table. All seems well now (I can record, and play other recordings) but I'm not taking any chances. I'm tranferring a few good films across to the laptop and then re-formatting.

Wise plan.

...and all seems to be OK now. So maybe it is an early symptom of corruption on the disc.
