ipod: shuffle or nano

I want a small ipod and have been looking at the nano and the shuffle and can’t decide. I don’t really think i need a screen, so that pointed me towards the shuffle but ive heard people say how useless it is. Any suggestions?

They're both perfectly good. It comes down to what you need.

The shuffle will play a decent number of songs but you don't have playlists and you can't see what the track is if either you need reminding or you want to listen to something in particular. But it's very small, very light and easy to use.

The nano allows you to have more tracks, playlists (which are very useful), pictures etc if you need them. Not quite as robust perhaps, as you'll want to protect the screen but very dinky and more flexible in terms of use.

If your just after basic music with no playlist and don't mind what order your music comes out in then the Shuffle would be ok for you but if you want extra like the obility to play music from a certain album or artist or even play video then I'd go for the Nano.

Its a hard one. Portability is really important, and in that respect i dont think anything can beat the shuffle, and i dont really use the screen on my current MP3 player too much, but i do use it now and again. How portable is the nano?

Oh the Current Ipod Nano isn't to bad actually its thin and is light and small its not as big as the previous 2 Ipod Nano's that came before it.

The new nano's are very portable but, as you said, nothing really beats the shuffle in this area.

Remember that the shuffle doesn't HAVE to be set to play in shuffle mode. You can organise your tracks in the order that you want in iTunes and play them back in the same order if you want. The shuffle has a switch on it to either play in order or to shuffle the songs.

The new 2gb shuffles are excellent value at £49 (1gb is only £32) If you think you might miss the screen then there's no question really. The screen on the Nano is excellent and you can also store photos or videos if you wish.

Also it's a question of capacity. If you know that 2gb isn't going to be enough then your choice is made - go for the nano.

Very. It's only about the size of two shuffles anyway. But the shuffle has a built in belt clip. The nano would have to go in a pocket or you get a carry case/strap type thing.

I got rid of my second generation nano, stupidly, because i brought a new music phone, only to find that they just don’t have sufficient battery life for listening to lots of music and making calls/texts. I think 2GB is enough really, its just im not to sure about the lack of the screen, if only the nano was smaller.

The 3rd Generation Ipod Nano is smaller than the previous 1st and 2nd Ipod Nano's for size definately its just slightly wider thats all.

Have you seen a nano 'in the flesh' so to speak? I remember seeing photos of it on apple.com and thinking it was pretty big and ugly. the first time I saw one I was amazed by just how small it was. If you haven't seen one I strongly recommend it before you finally decide.

Has to be a Nano if you are going to also get a dock for home use.

Oh I've got the Silver one I orginally wanted a Black one but the colour has grow on me plus the Interface on the New Nano is pretty cool :P I would update the Firmware when you get a chance though the 1.0 Firmware is a bit buggy.

Shuffle is perfect if you are busy doing something like at the Gym or something cos you just clip it on and load it up with your fav songs and let them play randomly.

If your looking for one that you can stick a lot of your collection (or all) onto and would like to select which songs you want to listen to rather than have all your favourites then the nano is better because of the screen with it to make selecting easy.
