N81 internet ?

Hi

I have just got the N81 8gb via Vodafone.

I have wireless broadband at home, and I wondered:

1. if I connect tothe WLAN and then surf the net on my phone, will I get charged by Vodafone at all?

2. if I download anything to the phone via my home WLAN will it cost me anything?

Sorry if its 2 obvious questions!

Hi crazygunuk,

Using the WiFi functionality of your handset is a fantastic way of accessing large amounts of data without incurring charges from Vodafone. As the service doesn't use our network in any way there is no cost from us.

If you're using your home connection it'll be free for surfing and downloading. If you were to use WiFi hotspots in restaurants or bars, for example, the hotspot provider may charge for using the hotspot but this would be paid to them rather than appearing on your Vodafone bill.

I hope this clears it up for you,

As edwardpeter said, there will be no charge from Vodafone. You wil have to pay your normal monthly broadband charge, but it wont cost you any more to use your phone.

Its difficult to diagnose why its not connecting, what error messages do you get when you try to connect.

the converse being (according to recent reports) that using your vodafone phone to download an episode of Friends abroad will cost you in the region of £12,000. So best to do it at home on the old wi-fi

The thing was the woman was using her husbands phone to download three episodes of the TV screen size version (over a gigabyte), apparently from a "non-official" source. She didn't tell her husband before he went abroad. The first he heard of it was when Vodafone phoned and said do you realise you downloaded over a gigabyte yesterday?

I'm not defending high roaming charges, but people need to accept responsibility for their own actions.
