Can I make porridge with soya milk? I had a cup of tea with it earlier and it tasted, well, a little odd Will porridge be Yuk made with it??

I bought a carton and took it back because I thought it was off .....I was told it was meant to be like that

Yes you can! I make my porridge with soya milk (I use Alpro) and it's lovely.

Well we tried it this morning and it was a bit.. well.. too weird Maybe an acquired taste like with the cups of tea!

I make Porridge with Soy all the time. It's delish! Got a really nice creamy taste without tasting like cream or milk *wonders if that makes sense?*

I use Soya Milk from Aldi. You can add it to coffee (once it's cooled down a bit) and it doesn't curdle.

We use unsweetened soya (don't like the sweet variety) in porridge but add chopped dates towards the end of cooking for sweetness. Very delicious!

Use it on porridge/cereal, and prefer it to ordinary milk when drunk "neat". But in tea or coffee - yuk!

I can understand if you are intolerant but if not, why when cow juice is so lovely?

What soya milk are you using, malaikah? I find the taste/creaminess can vary quite a bit between brands. It's worth trying a few different ones until you find one you're happy with.

Because cow juice has come about in nature to ensure young cows put on huge amounts of weight very quickly. Whenever I think I'm putting on weight I just cut out the dairy and switch to soya alternatives for a bit and the weight just falls off me. Even skimmed milk doesn't have that effect.

I avoid wheat and pretty much most carbs, milk and dairy don't effect me that way, thankfully, soya milk tastes rank. Interesting - thanks

I never liked cows' milk on its own anyway, but even if I did I wouldn't drink it, mainly because of the cruelty issues.

I don't know how it would taste in hot drinks (never tried it), but I like Alpro's Vanilla flavoured soya milk. You can only seem to get it at Sainsbury's and Waitrose, and as it's also organic, it's a bit pricey at around £1.35 a carton, but the vanilla really gives it a lift, and completely disguises the soya flavour, which I admit can be an acquired taste.

My partner can't drink cows milk so has used soya milk for years. When I moved in with him we had soya for him and dairy for me. It didn't take long for me to notice the amount of fat floating on the top of my tea/coffee compared to his so I tried soya milk. Yes its a funny colour and tastes rather odd initially but after a week or so's (just like giving up sugar) you really don't notice the difference.

As Snowfairy has pointed out, the various brands of soya milk can be quite different. You just have to keep trying til you find the one that suits. Our preference is for the sweetened variety, and we prefer supermarket own brands rather than the named brands.

You can use soya milk in place of dairy milk in everything, in fact in makes wonderful ice cream! Last weekend I tried a vegan French toast recipe (I'm trying to avoid eggs) - soya cream, soya milk, cornflour and gram flour - it was wonderful.

One word of warning - soya milk is best added to drinks before you add the hot tea/water - it can seperate and look vile, though it doesn't harm the taste.

I really like that Alpro Vanilla too, and especially their Chocolate flavour, which I think is available now in most supermarkets with all the other chilled milks. (I could live on that stuff! )

They also do a Strawberry flavour which I can usually get from Waitrose and Tesco, that comes in a 3-pack of small cartons (250ml). They were £1.09 from Waitrose (just checked my receipt). The chilled litre cartons of Alpro soya milk were on offer - buy 2, save £1, and this included the chocolate flavour (so obviously it wouldn't have made sense not to get some ).

Also, in case anyone's interested, I got some Alpro Peach Soya Yogurt (4x125g) - Buy 2 for £2. (normally about £1.49 each, I think - again, Waitrose)

I love the slightly 'off' taste of soya...it's the best on Weetabix.

Alpro strawberry is my fave..it tastes like those flavoured milk drink I had as a kid.

Agreed. I also like the 'So Good' chocolate soya milk. You can get it with the rest of the long-life milks in Tesco and Morrisons. I can't remember whether I've ever seen it in Asda or Sainsburys, but it's also really nice.


Although I don't think the smaller cartons are great value for money, I do occasionally treat myself to a pack of these too.

I thought that at first, but if you add up 3 x 250ml, that's 3/4 of a litre for just over a pound at the current Waitrose price - the other flavours I find are usually around £1.35 - £1.49 per litre, so it can actually work out slightly better value for the strawberry ones!
