Help needed for MP3 player
Rainbows
29-02-2008
Hiya people
Okay i do not have an ipod or a computer but I want to buy an mp3 player that is really good. My friend has said i can use her computer to get my songs but i just want any ideas.
The memory i am looking for is about 8000 songs but I want a nice looking one.
I was looking at the ipod touch but is there any other suggestions - not neccesarily an ipod people can give me?
Obviously due to no computer I would need one that can be charged by a plug not a computer.
Many thanks in advance,
Rain - in - Bow

On the basis that you want 8000 songs on it, the touch is no good to you.

I can fit (approx) 800 songs on a 4gb player (mixed bag of bitrates/filesizes).

Thats 200 songs per gb.

So, you're going to need at least 40gb to hold your 8000 songs (conservative estimate, you should really aim to get more than that. Probably 60gb minimum I'd say).

You don't get iPods that size except the classic.

You *could* encode them all at a really low bitrate and maybe cram the whole lot on a touch but the sound quality would be pretty nasty ....

Most MP3 players can be charged by a mains adapter (I'd think all 40gb+ ones should). It's just some of them make you buy the mains charger separately (Apple & Archos being the two that spring to mind).

Another think worth thinking about is a PS2/PS3 (possibly Xbox?) can be used to charge an iPod through their USB ports if you have one of those?

What if I wanted to take the memory down to 4000 songs?
What sort of mp3 player would be best then or is it always best to stick with an ipod?

Try e-buyer.

Saw one in Currys...bit Ipodish Achos or something? About £48.

Well, using the same estimates as above, you'd need a minimum of 20gb.

I think a 32gb version of the touch has been released. not sure if it's found it's way to the UK yet though and it ain't cheap! (Over £300 I think)

You're asking the wrong person here.

I don't like iPods ..... not enough freedom of file movement for me. I've owned a good few MP3 players but never anything by Apple and none of the newer offerings from them have convinced me otherwise.

If you're happy with the iTunes/iPod model (which I suspect you might be as you don't have a computer) then go for it ....

If you can find an MP3 player with the capacity to hold 4000 tracks (never mind 8000) for under £50 (that isn't a piece of Chinese junk from ebay), I'll be mightily impressed!

Errr .... a 2gb player will take around 400 tracks.

Nothing like the 4000/8000 the OP is after.

Oh ..... and you can get a tiny 4gb Creative player for about the same money on Amazon.

Money does not come into it really - well like 250pounds limit but i do not neccessarily want an apple just a smart looking one that is best value for money.

How about this?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NW-HD3-...4292895&sr=1-1

It would probably only store around 5000 songs though.

Why do you need 4000/8000 loaded permanently?

I might get a 4GB Veho from e-buyer for £30.

That one still uses SonicStage.

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole for that reason alone.

Doesn't really offer anything over the touch either to be honest .... if anything, it offers less (battery life and shock resistance apart) ..... and I'm abaout as far from an Apple fanboy as they come.

Having switched to Cowon from Creative when I got my A2, I'm now a big fan of their kit. Sound quality is fantastic on the Cowon players ..... certainly sounds better to me than my wifes iPod, using Sennheiser 'phones on both.

Not sure that Cowon do a player that would fit the OP's needs though. The 60gb X5L might have been an option but I think it's been discontinued now. I think the 30gb version is still available though. (In both X5 and X5L versions? not sure .... the L version has a bigger battery for massive battery life but it does make it slightly chunkier)

lol .... no worries.

SonicStage is the software older Sony players have to use to upload music to them. It's a truly horrible piece of software and reason enough not to use one of the players that relies on it. Sony finally saw the light and binned it. Their newer players can just use drag and drop. The one in that link is an older one that uses SonicStage ..... so I wouldn't touch it.

It has good battery life and some sort of shock resistance (if you drop it, it should survive) but, other than that, doesn't offer much.

I wouldn't buy it.

This:

... is the Cowon X5 I was on about.

Functionally, and technically, they're very good players and you can get a version with super long battery life.

I managed to find the 60gb version (which would hold your 8000 tracks easily) for about £220 in the UK.

But ..... much as I hate to admit it, the iPod classic is far better value. you can get the 80gb version for around £130-ish from what I can see on google.

On your £250 budget, the best touch you'll get would be the 16gb version (£230-ish) which would hold about 3200 (approx) songs.
