Apple iphone

Hi everyone,

Not a HD question, but seen as were all into our new technology I just wondered if anyone has used or maybe owns the new Apple iphone?

I am debating getting one with O2 after I have sold my XDA Orbit 2 which should more than cover the cost of the phone.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

i've had an iPhone since launch. They are the greatest mobile devices ever made. It doesn't matter that they don't have MMS or bluetooth file send, they are fan-bloody-tastic. Totally re-write the handheld device paradigm.

I decided to go for the LG Viewty which does pretty much everything iPhone does (apart from the turning the browser round when you turn the phone gimic). It has some great features including a 5 megapixel camera, it's own 'muvee' (movie) studio package and can do things like merge three pictures into one and record movie content for you until your memory is full (basically)............lovely piece of software.

Might be better asking in the mobile phone forums

My niece has a viewty. They're not even in the same ballpark. You have to accept a couple of things, mainly that the manufacturer is not getting involved with the megapixel wars like Nokia and the others...the camera is a decent mobile phone camera but no more. It is not pretending to be a professional camera. You might have an 8 megapixel camera on your phone but it won't stop the lens being a bit poor or your memory not big enough to store more than 10 shots. The iPhone takes very decent mobile phone shots.

What you will appreciate is the amazing web browser and the usable email, the great Google Maps. Can your Viewty's web browser dial a cal for you from a restaurant's homepage? That's apart from it being a really good video iPod. I could tell a story about how I was listening to a podcast and got a call, lisened to voicemail, booked some work after checking my diary and sent an email to my diary service, then seamlessy went back to my podcast in about 10 keypresses, but I won't. Suffice it to say that the iPhone is the world's most popular mobile browser after only 9 months of availability in 5 countries. It changes everything.

I am really tempted now, just need to sell my Orbit 2 which should more than cover the cost of the iphone.

Think I will visit ebay and the sooner this sells the sooner I can think about getting it

Just realised their is a mobile forum on here, never been to it before so have posted on their now, but wanted fellow HD suscribers to give their opinion any way

I know a 3G or (maybe) WiMax iPhone will be released at the back end of this year. It's just gonna happen. I don't care, because (a) my iPhone has already paid for itself and (b) technology moves on, as it always does. I've changed my phone yearly every year since 1995, i don't see why I should stop now. I paid £150 for the "Matrix" Nokia back in the day. I paid a lot of money for the SE T68 too. The iPhone's data plan has saved me £70 a month since I defected from Orange, and it will continue to do so. If you upgrade your iPhone when iPhone2 comes out, you will be able to keep your existing contract going , but it'll likely be extended again to 18 months. That's the price we early adopters will pay. Your iPhone1 will still work, of course.

I take your points and don't want my reply to end up sounding like those two presenters on the Gadget Show but I don't need my mobile to turn into a multi functional consumer version of a blackberry with extra gadgets, just because they are gadgets but don't get me wrong, it seems a great device.

You clearly use your phone for accessing all of these services that I would have no intention of using. Do you lead a very busy life by any chance? Accessing email, using google maps and calling a restaurant whilst sending an email and such like sounds like you need a PA as well as your iPhone

Just proves how different lives we all lead and have differing requirements/wants/needs/desires, hence why I thought that the OP might be better off posting his questions in the mobile forum.

Did you get the chance/have the time to use your nieces Viewty - we keep finding little gems of functions (yes I didn't read the manual cover to cover, actually didn't read it at all) and features that keep surprising us and you here moments of "oh, look at this!" or "I didn't know it did this!"

Honestly, you would not believe the amount of time I spend dashing to London to a meeting in a given restaurant in a back street - it's what the iPhone was made for!

I am a freelance so I am often in a different place or city every day, so it's a wonderful boon. In addition, I despise flash photography and take my EOS 350D everywhere I might want to take photos, with 2 lenses! I guess the iPhone was kind of tailor-made for me, hehe.

If I was you, i'd hang on until july and wait for the nokia n96, from what I have seen and read it looks awesome, I've got an n95, which is superb, but this takes it to the next level!

I'd hang fire on anything with a small screen if you're eyes are too poor to notice that DigiSpy has a complete section for "Phones".

I would have got one if more flash memory and 3G.

I expect my next phone will be the HP 914C which should be out soon.

I don't have an iPhone myself, but I have mates with them so I know what they are like, plus I do own an iPod Touch, which is essentially an iPhone without the phone. The multi-touch user interface is great, and it's applications are well designed. The iPod functionality is also excellent. However, as a phone, I find it to be quite poor, such as with the lack of 3G and MMS. Also being locked to O2 on a contract is an inconvenience if you are not already an O2 customer, or don't have a contract. If you are looking for a phone, my advice is to get a better one than the iPhone, as for the price of the iPhone you can get something like the Nokia N95, which is an amazing feature packed phone.

The lack of 3g is a bit of a red herring...browsing is just as fast in EDGE as a 3g Nokia browser because Safari is so much better than any of the software the others have. MMS is really something I don't miss...50p a message, or a free email? no contest. The battery life rewards for not having a current 3g chipset is well worth it. My colleagues with N95s have them permanently plugged in the wall! My iPhone gives a good 2 days with a modicum of everything being done.

i have an iphone and a 350D too. both are great!

looking now at the front page the n95 has three threads. iphone also has 3 (one of which is a duplicate thread started by the op elsewhere and moved here by the mods, i think).

Browsing on the iPhone is so much nicer than the N95, 3G or no 3G.

Simply tapping on a link > Having to navigate through a page with a joystick to get to the link you want

If you can live with the iPhone main shortcomings (MMS, video recording, average camera) then there is no better device.

Simply tapping on a link > Having to navigate through a page with a joystick to get to the link you want If you can live with the iPhone main shortcomings (MMS, video recording, average camera) then there is no better device. (IMO, of course!)
