5,000 Spam Emails per day - Is this a lot ?

I'm one of the original Homechoice customers and rarely have anything to complain about, but since email was offline for a few days a couple of months ago I regularly get in the region of 5,000 spam emails a day.

Admittedly I haven't reported this to Tiscali, but I've previously queried the control of spam with the support folk who said they couldn't help and their suggestion was to set up message rules which I've done, of the 5,000 only 150 end up in my inbox.

Whilst the spam is irritating it's the time it takes to check my messages that really bugs me. Yesterday took over 4 hours as I hadn't checked for a few days.

I have another "Homechoice" email account which is virtually free of spam and now use this for most things. I also have a "Tiscali" email account and this doesn't get hit either.

I work in the IT industry and know there are applications that can help, so I struggle to understand why Tiscali can't do something.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Of course it all depends on whether spammers get your address in the first place, I only use my email for friends and business and never buy or sign up to web sites with it.

I've had a Homechoice a/c for the same time as you, cpc, and I've had a spam problem since the same time as you but nothing like to the same extent.

Homechoice/Tiscali admitted to me that they don't bother to block any of it - how can Google be so good and Tiscali so bad?

That's all I got before the big email breakdown I'm now using SpamExperts filter and it's pretty good, but it's being kept busy!

I reported the problem again and as expected Tiscali said they couldn't do anything. They suggested I get a spam filter which is cetainly an option but they missed the point I was trying to make, it's not the content that bothers me it's the time it takes to check the mailbox. I can't see a spam filter having any effect on that.

I don't think I'll bother checking this mailbox any more, at 5,000 messages a day I wonder how long it will take at Tiscali to spot a problem.

I only ever get 1 or 2 a month.

Unfortunately once the spammers get your address it's already too late! Filters etc. go some way and cut the amount of spam that you actually receive but there are always some that get through the net. In a world where spam is only getting worst it is a constant battle.

My best advise would be to keep 2 accounts. 1 for family and friends and the other for anything else your not sure of. This is what I have done since I've had e-mail and it has always worked very well.

I have one or two regular newsletters signed up to my main account but only the one's I really trust. The other account I just check every now and then and basically just clear it down. I find Yahoo serve me quite well as a junk account becuase there spam filtering is pretty good

Me too.

My main concern is that this flood of spam only started at the time of the Homechoice.co.uk email failure in January.

In addition, I am getting emails from bona fide Homechoice addresses which have been 'modified' to show my own address as the From.

Surely these facts point to a critical weakness at Tiscali/Homechoice.

Why even bother with a tiscali email address at all? If the company gets bought out (which at some point it inevitably will) then who will want a tiscali email address anyway - I mean do you know anyone who still uses a compuserve email address?!? And it sounds like tiscali had email problems a while ago with people's email not working and now loads of spam - what a joke!

Get a yahoo address (or similar). They seem to have pretty good spam filtering for free (I get about 25 per day straight into the spam folder which I think is reasonable). Then you don't have to rely on unreliable ISPs and can change provider as often as you like without having to keep changing or setting up email forwarding etc.

If you don't like the idea of a yahoo address, then why not get you own domain such as ilovebaconsarnies.co.uk and have a personalised email address that you can keep forever - it only costs a few quid a year!

It's us Homechoice customers who are being affected. We've had Homechoice.co.uk email addresses for many years with very few problems, it's just the recent breakdown that's left us with all this spam.

I like my emails to come into Outlook Express, I don't like Hotmail/Yahoo etc. It shouldn't be too much to ask.
