Philips 24" widescreen
I am looking to buy a 24" widescreen tv as a second set. I have found model 24PW6322 available on the net as an ex rental model for 90 quid. Before buying I wondered if anybody had this model and could highlight any up/downsides to it.
I will be using it to watch Sky through and the occasional DVD. Cheers. Woody |

I don't know that model but Philips have had many problems with early CRT failure on sets made from 1998-2001 so if it was produced at that time I would be very wary.

If I were you I would go for the 24PW6006 - looking at getting one of these myself at the moment. The best price listed for one of these at PriceRunner.co.uk is £230 (the model in your original is not current so hence isn't listed). My research into it has found this model went into production in 2001, so you are less likely to suffer problems - firstly it'll be new whilst your looking at getting an old set, and also it won't be from the period there were problems with the screens as mentioned above.
You will also get a much better featured set I suspect - it has a "Super Flat" tube so there is much less distortion to the picture than most widescreen TV's, although not quite as good as a flatscreen - but then you'd be looking at paying much more for a flatscreen. On the whole the feedback I've had about the 24PW6006 is very positive, it seems only when people start mucking about with things they don't understand in the service menus they run into major trouble with it. Just a suggestion

Can anyone tell me how to access those Philips engineer/servicemenus? I want to try to get rid of the overscan that means I can't see a complete picture unless I select 14:9 and zoom in on the image from there. Any other setting results in some part of the picture going off the edge of the screen. I'm not too bothered if I really mess things up as it's a rental set...
Sorry for wandering slightly O/T, but I can't start a thread for three days

062596 followed by pressing +i enables me to access the menu on my phillips 24pw6006 tv, it might work for other models.
word of advice, i would jot down the existing settings before making any changes. do a google for "062596 menu" and you should be able to find more info |

Like I've mentioned in another thread...great set but watch out for dirty marks or shading on the screen which become more noticeable as the unit heats up...
Sadly nothing that can be done....hopefully it's only an isolated problem...and I've decided to stick with it rather than demand a new set. |

After many month's of umming and arrhhing I finally got a 24PW6006 from Comet today - great value at £199, so as it was over £50 cheaper than anywhere else, I spent that on a three year warrenty.
However a word of warning about the service menu as above - BE VERY CAREFUL - it's quite easy to press a down button to cycle through the various options and also press a left or right button at the same time to adjust the value I entered this menu to try and cure a little problem mine seems to have where the tickers on channels like ITV and Sky Sports News where it appeared at the sides the text was going around a corner or something - I very nearly ended up with a widescreen mode that was the same as 4:3 and a 14:9 Zoom mode that was a massive zoom in of the center portion of the screen Fortunately - all salvaged ![]() Actually best advice I can give - the engineer menu doesn't actually exist - NEVER GO IN THERE!!! ![]() Edit: These are the current settings I have - the picture is perhaps shifted a little too far to the right but these recovered settings I'm pretty sure are what came from the factory: Geometry -> Horizontal: VSL = 34 VAM = 23 VSC = 20 VSH (Vertical Shift) = 33 (31 would probably be better but I now can't get the damned thing to save it :S) VX = 25 H60 = 9 V60 = -2 Vertical: HP = 31 HB = 32 HSH = 32 EWW = 11 EWP = 23 VCP = 24 LCP = 23 EWT = 29 If anyone else with a 24PW6006 is brave enough to enter these menus, I'd be interested to compare my values to those of others...
