Except show the price on the screen Before! you make that call.

If the phone companies can text you when you roam networks then they can definitely call you when you're running up £11,000 in fees!

If Im dialling Voda from Virgin in Virginia I want to know via Free text how much it will cost First!

Has anyone heard of a service allowing users to accurately measure fees using numbers before calling?

You can on Orange.

Text "from xxx" eg: "from france"

and send it to 159 on contract, or 452 on Pay as You Go.

You get a free text back with costs.

Also, for calling internationally from the UK, substitute "from" to "to"

Costs nothing either!

It would be good if they could show your balance going down (on PAYG) or up (on pay monthly) as you make a call.

I don't think its possible for the network to tell you the cost of the call because:
They don't know if it will go to Voicemail, be ignored.
They don't know how long it will last.

The networks all publish their roaming rates on their websites, it would be prudent to check the cost (perhaps, print it out) before travelling.

As for the woman who ran up an £11,000 roaming bill on her husbands phone by "downloading" tv shows while abroad, I think that serves them right. I'm just sorry that Vodafone alerted them the same day.

Hi everyone,

I understand the alarm at reports in the news of the high bill and that you'd like clarification of charges. To find out call charges for when you go abroad you can text 'from germany' to 4636 (replacing germany with your destination.) You'll receive a text just like with the Orange service mentioned above that tells you the charges.

Thanks,

edwardpeter
