Orange Phone Upgrade Changes
I have been eligible for an upgrade every four months for a number of years - usually paying about £50 excess each time for a phone of my choice. Today I called Orange and was told that there were changes made in February and now customers are only offered upgrades with three months left to go with their contract.
Has anyone heard about this? Surely this change should have been relayed to the customer?! |

I belive they kept the change rather quiet though, i guess it's not part of your service contract or something? |

i have been doing the same for the last few years with prem500 plan and then panther55. if this is true and its now all changed then i can see me getting someone to buy me out.
this was one of the only reasons i stayed with orange and if the doors been shut then i'm off. last upgrade in december i was told that i could no longer upgrade early through 3rd party dealers such as p4u and cpw so this time around i was already a little miffed that orange aren't bringing much new to the party in the way of handsets. am gonna ring orange to see whats up!! |

hi ricardo.
just rang retentions and the guy was a little vague. he stated that due to rising costs of handsets from suppliers and the need to bring orange into line with other providers. as of 4th feb rules were changed. he told me i should wait til month 6 and i should be able to upgrade free or small fee. but he could not give me any further details. i found this on the net and am a little miffed by the reading. seams that on the plus side fees will be cancelled and on the down side the frequency of upgrades is reduced and the biggie for me was the carry over of remaining contract to the new contract. that is very bad!!! The guy pointed out that £60+/month qualifies as UIC band 5. http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache...lnk&cd=4&gl=uk this is a html of a pdf file dated 1/2/08 Last edited by neilied : 05-03-2008 at 12:42. Note that Band 5 customers don't have the carry over bit added, the new contract just resets from the upgrade date. |

Many customers in UIC band 5 will believe that they deserve to upgrade earlier as they spend more money with Orange than other customers. From 4 February, if the customer is a band 5 customer, you will be able to upgrade these customers earlier than the last 90 days of their contract. In fact, if the customer has gone over half their contract (i.e. completed 9 months on an 18 mth contract, 6 months on a 12 mth contract or 12 months on a 24 mth contract ), they will be able to upgrade from that point and not have to carry over any remaining days. However, this will be subject to an upgrade fee which you can find out on the IVR. |

after a few callls to retentions and a visit to the retails shop. i conclude that these are the changes and although still better than most its a big move from before.
pre 4th feb month 4 upgrade (band 5) £50 fee reset 12 month contract. post 4th feb band 1 - 4, month 9 onwards no fee but remaining contract added to new contract. band 5 - upgrade from month 6 of 12 or 1/2 way through contract length. contract resets not added to new contract. but cost i am told by retentions wont be free or small but prob between £200 - £300 or of course you can leave it to month 9 and take the first deal???!!! Manager of the retail shop said he had fielded many complaints already and gave me the complaints address to write to. this change has been compounded by previous changes that a) have to be 6 months in not 3 to change tariff, and b) when changing tariff can only drop by 1 tariff not pick the lowest. so i can drop to panther 45 but not lower. |

what!?!?!
so basically if i want to upgrade now ill have the current contract added to my new one? thats total crap! i put up with their poor handset selection, crap software and ok signal because of their great customer service and the ability to upgrade early. now its down to customer service and i dont spose that will be long till your speaking to india! bad day for orange, imo still ive been thinking about just going sim only and buying a phone direct cuts out all the lost features from network providers |
