USB DVD Player Wanted!
Hello, I want to hook up an external hard drive in view of watching films and listening to music via my television. All I am missing is a DVD player with a USB socket to allow this.
Could any of you point me in the direction of a mid-range DVD player? I deally it needs to be black to match the tv. I don't want to spend more than £60 odd. Thanks boys and girls! |

I was looking for something similar late last year. I found the Philips 5960 Dvd player had a USB socket where you could attach an externally powered hard drive. It would only display the first 8 characters of a file name though as the hard drive has to be FAT formatted.
In the end I went for one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...urce=1&DOY=5m3 It has a scart out on the back and transmits the 16:9 flag, which some divx dvd players dont do. It has played everything that I have loaded onto it and will even play a ripped dvd with menus - if you have the urge to do something like that. |

My samsung DVD player has a usb port and I usually just plug a 4gb memory key in and play downloaded films / tv shows that way.
Make sure you get one that will play divx etc. as well. The only issue I have is occasionally the USB port can't read the data quick enough so it sometimes skips, you may have that problem if using a large disk, not 100% sure though as I've not tested it. Excellent feature though and highly recommended! |

I purchased the Philips DVP5960 dvd player about two months ago.
It has a USB socket on the front and has played all my downloaded divx / xvid avi's without problem. It is divx 6 compliant and plays packed bitstreams, unlike others. I currently use a sandisk usb memory stick but other users have had success with a variety of hard drives and mp3 devices as long as they are FAT32 formatted. USB socket has onlty let me down once when playing divx files with a high bit rate, due to the fact that it is only USB1.1. The usual file size of 700 to 900Mb for a movie is no problem, but I had the chronicles of Narnia last half hour at 700Mb. It is also black and slim although quite wide. Comet online were selling it for 35 GBP delivered whereas currys were selling in store at 49.99GBP. It willl also play divx/xvid burned on CD/DVD without problem and high bit rates as mentioned above without problem. One more thing, it had HDMI output and coaxial digital sound, so will work with your large LCD and surround sound. I have read a lot of posts about philips being crap, but this unit seems to be ticking all my boxes so far, only time will tell. Hope this helps. |

) USB port is 1.1. That is maybe the reason the machine can not read my external hard drives.
Does that seem right?
