Obviously, that DOESN'T embarass him!
Since Steph doesn't seem to be back in form yet (Hope that arm is healing well!), I'll do my best to recap...
This was the first live episode of the season and in general, it seemed to be a lovefest, with even Simon heaping bushels of praise upon many of the contestants. The order of the contestants was atypical, IMO - usually they put the strongest at the beginning and the end. Not so this week.
First up was
Luke Menard singing Wham's
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. It showcased his odd voice and if nobody else did, at least he seemed to be having fun during his song. Simon and I both agree- he probably will be out this week.
Next,
David A. peformed Phil Collins’
Another Day in Paradise. For some reason, it reminded me of performances on the talent portion of our Miss America contests, maybe because he played piano during it. I was never crazy about this song and didn't like the performance as much as last weeks by David, but he did give a nice interpretation of it. Perhaps the best comment was by Paula who said, "I loved that there were a couple of notes that were off, because it shows you’re not a make-believe person". Simon asked David to remember his age and sing songs that are a bit less gloomy.
Danny Noriega sang
Tainted Love and aside from the hip action and his purple hair extensions, there's not much going for this kid. Paula didn't listen to his singing, because she "LOVES" him.
Ironically considering the news stories about his past as a stripper,
David Hernandez sang
It's All Coming Back to Me Now. He's a good singer and easy on the eyes, but nothing exciting, so far as I can see. Simon said, "Last week was better, but you 100 percent secured a place in the final 12 with that one.” and Paula was pleased to see that he had found his niche. Randy has a new phrase this year, "Big ol' voice" which he applied to David H. in complimenting his song choice.
Anyone else think that
Michael Johns looks a bit like Orlando Bloom? He sang
Don't You Forget About Me.
Was it Simon that said that Michael seems to be a rock-wannabe but did better with the ballads? Paula loves his low range and how he holds the microphone. Not sure now, but I agree with this statement. He *could* be in trouble if Danny Noriega gets the teen-girl cuteness and the VFTW votes.
David Cook is the one to watch in this round. They had to reschedule him in the lineup because of some sound glitches, but finally he was on with his electric guitar, singing a rocked-up version of Lionel Richie's
Hello. Randy said it sounded "slightly emo", Paula thinks he'll be a "Great Shining Star" and Simon felt that it was a very brave thing to try doing what he did to that song, that it worked and he loved it. He went on to say that Lionel Richie would love it, too and that he would know seeing how he ran into him just this past week at Whole Foods.
I was creeped out by
Jason Castro's most embarrassing moment, so I can't say I completely listened to him singing
Hallelujah. I'm also not a folk-music fan, which is what his voice sounds like to me, so I wasn't as wowed by it as the judges who commented on its difficulty, the effortless with which Jason sang it and Simon who added that it's one of his most favorite songs and that Jason's version was "absolutely brilliant".
Chikezie sang
All the Woman That I Need. Simon wanted to know if it was a Whitney Houston song and starting to hear a list of all the folks that sang it, demanded to know if Whitney sang it. She did, causing Simon to say, "Then I didn't like it." Randy said that Chikezie definitely belongs in the top 12, much to Chikezie's relief.
A very decent showing tonight and for the first time in a while, it looks like a very strong round of men!
