I was saddened to read of the death of Norman Smith aka Hurricane Smith. He died on the 3rd March.

I cannot imagine too many of you have heard of him. He was the record producer for many of the early Beatles hits as well producing the early Pink Floyd albums and Pretty Things too. Norman even played drums on a few of the Floyd tracks. He went on to release a couple of hits himself - Don't Let It Die" and "Oh Babe What Would You Say?".

A very talented man indeed.

Rest in peace.

Hardly surprising! The titles around 35 years old. One of them got to the US Number One slot. He is more famous as a producer. I am probably showing my age.

I remember those two songs particularly Oh Babe with that geat sax (tune/words now stuck in my head ) Pity there's not been any news of his death considering his work with the Beatles / Floyd etc. Thanks for the post.

RIP Hurricane

I have a feeling that we put GOS as the answer for that record in a pop quiz a few months ago...

What I meant was I have in my mind the idea that there is a particular song that I associate his name with but I can't think of the title or how it goes. If you list a few more tracks he worked on and/or recorded one of them may well be it.

Edit:Got it! A quick bit of searching and I found his version of Who Was It,it's definitely his version I know and no I'm not confusing him with Gilbert O'Sullivan! I'm sure his version was on an early seventies compilation album I had at one point.

Yes I remember Hurricane Smith and his songs "Don't let it die" and "Oh Babe what would you say." I'm sure he wore Hawiian shirts and a white summery trilby hat and he stood at a keyboard?
I'm sorry to hear he has passed away.

Thanks for that. I could remember Don't Let It Die, but not Oh Babe. However, when I played it, I was surprised the title hadn't jogged my memory. Amazing how lyrics can come back, isn't it? I was singing along.

I read today that Norman Smith had died, but had no idea that it was the same person as Hurricane Smith.

I remember those songs very well.

Another legendary figure gone.

R.I.P. Hurricane.
