Tiscali+ & Wireless

Dear All,

I am looking into the best way of getting rid of the cabling nightmare left behind by the Tiscali engineer in my living room. For reasons best known to him he decided to run a phone cable, rather than ethernet round the side of the room, which is the first thing I need to "change".

I'm either looking at 1 x 10m ethernet and moving the router back to where it used to be sat with my NAS drive, or, what I'm really interested in, is some how connecting the TV box using WiFi.

Has anyone attempted to do this before? I have a few options that I'm going to try and explore, preferably without ending up with too much useless kit:

Plug in a USB wireless adaptor to the back of the Tiscali+ box, costs £15 but unlikely to work
Get a WiFi extender with ethernet port(s) and plug into that, should work but haven't found the hardware yet
Get some ethernet via plug socket hardware and plug into that, probably the most expensive
The arguement agains this, due to reliability/bandwidth I don't really buy into - I can reboot my router if I have to, and I'm only getting a realistic 4Mbit connection anyway.

Cheers

Option 3 is the best route here and has been given the all-clear by Tiscali. Just make sure you get kit rated at at least 85Mb - the faster the better.

Do you have any recommendations? I'm assuming its all much of a muchness...

I've ordered a pair of Dabs Value thingy's - they're £45 rather than £100 and don't actually plug into the wall. I was a bit worried about blocking the use of two sockets... Rated up to 85Mbit so I'll post details about how I get on..

Just a quick note to say this works straight out of the box, definately recommend to anyone who doesn't like cables running around their house!

Do you have a link for these?

I'm an ex homechoice customer and after migrating to tiscali, I'm getting the tiscali+ box installed on Saturday.

Would I need to change my wireless router? I currently have a Linksys WRT54GS which works perfectly with my old homechoice (silver) box.

I too have the same question, anyone please?

Yes, you have to use their supplied Speedtouch router. I've not had any problems with mine.

Is it wireless? - I was hoping I could use my netgear WGR614 that came with Homechoice, saves having to change all my settings.

Thnaks.

The Speedtouch BB... (can't remember Ref No) that was supplied to me by Homechoice prior to migration is wireless and has caused no problems.

I'll also add that when I had a silver Homechoice box I used an Apple Airport Express router, which was connected to my printer and hifi. I've now got this set up as a client on the network created by the Speedtouch router so I can still print and play my iTunes library wirelessly.

What are the details of these wireless 'extenders' from Dabs please? Presumably you are saying that they work just fine plugging into the Tiscali+ box?

I also have a problem with my Wii box in respect that since Tiscali installed their router (Siemens Gigaset) rather than the Netgear RangeMax I had, the Wii just won't connect (and yes I've updated all the security information).

Also, with the wireless router they have supplied, sometimes, it takes a reboot of the router before any of the laptops (PC and Mac based) can connect into the network which is a real pain as you also have to reboot the Tiscali+ box.

Any similar experiences?

I have a ZD1211B wireless dongle on my oldish Compaq Presario, it connects to the internet without any rebooting of the Tiscali router.
