I don't care if it charted at #378973289643243433 to tell you the truth. That isn't an indication of how good the album was.

Pete "the dirtbag" Doherty is so over rated. Its just the in thing at the moment to latch onto a junkie and hero worship him for doing absolutly nothing except jack up and appear in the papers all the time for being a waster.

Well he is certainly not, Kurt Cobain; who had more talent in his little finger then Pete has in his whole drugged up body.

Quite funny how The Libertines and The Strokes kick started the current Indie guitar trend we're seeing at the moment, well revived it anyway, and yet Pete is talentless

I do not condone his drug antics one bit but listen to Up The Bracket and then you will realise he is a great great talent! Anyone who 'hates' him really should look at themselves in the mirror. Do you hate every drug addict? No! You just hate the press attention he gets and that's down to the fact he is a talent person NOT because he shagged Kate Moss. He was in the papers well before then for less than good reasons!

The Libertines are the reason we get massive chart topping bands like Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Cheifs about now. They laid down the foundations and others took the ball and ran with it.

If the libertines had released Up the bracket during the current trend they would be treated as the biggest band! So if it's not your cup of tea fine! I have no problem with that. But why hate something you really don't care about? I can't say i like Countdown but i don't hate it!!

Or stick to reading the tabloids and let them tell you what to think. Up to you. Your hot air your wasting!

Yeah, you're so right. I only listen to his quite extensive catalogue of music because it's the 'in' thing.
And I buy the tabloids every single day just so I can see him jacking up.

What a fool I've been!

No matter what you think of Babyshambles' music, Pete Doherty is still an idiot, and naming him a hero is pretty weak. The NME only has a bucket of people, though, like Muse, Arctic Monkeys and Babyshambles... anyone else is uncool.

I do like The Libertines... wish he did music like that still.

If you care to listen to Shotter's Nation, it's very Libertines-esque. A real return to the old sound.

Its very easy to buy all the tabloid stories about Pete but there is so much more about him than the tripe they like to print.
He has made some brilliant music and you only have to read what his contemporaries think of him to see how talented he is.

he/they are not fit to lick up the vomit of Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane or Janis Joplin, nor even that of Jim Morrison, Miles Davis, Peter Green or Keith Moone.

to be a wasted druggy genius is one thing; to be a self-absorbed and talentless **** is another.

spot the difference - John Coltrane and Miles Davis are still selling albums 50 years after their best work, Pete Docherty will be lucky to be selling the Big Issue after 10.

there is no comparison - Brian Jones or Syd Barrett were leagues above Doherty and always will be.

drugs are not an excuse for lack of talent.

Shine on you crazy diamonds...

There's probably no other songwriter in the country at the moment that could have written a song as good as Albion.

For that reason alone he is a hero.

Once again I'm not sure why the drugs are being included in the debate. Drugs are nothing to do with what he does for a living.

His fans couldn't care less about what substances he takes, and nor should anyone else. Leave that to the tabloids.

'A lack of talent' is an incredibly bold statement, given his (and Carl Barat's) influence on today's music scene. As people have already said, a lot of the bands around today wouldn't be around if it wasn't for the Libertines.
They changed the landscape of the British indie scene, and whether you enjoyed their music or not, their mark has been made quite significantly.

the druggie bit is just to say that I'm not writing off artists because of drugs or alcohol - many great artists did a lot of harm to themselves that way and still produced great art/music - no, my point is that I have heard his stuff and I really don't think it is very significant in the grand scheme of things.
I don't think that in 10-20 years, let alone 40-50, people will look back and say that he was an important artistic influence.

'Indie' guitar bands have been around from the late 70s and became noticeable in the early 1980s and although the presentation changes, there are few important bands that you could point to and say that Doherty's music was essential to the development of their sound.

I would very much beg to differ on that one.

You'd be very much wrong then. He's irrelevant now and he'll be forgotten about in 5 years, let alone 10. I just wish he doesn't die of an overdose cause then he'll become some sort of genius which he doesn't deserve.

Oh, and NME is no more than Heat for EMOs and Students. People who can make their own minds up about anything steer clear of both publications for a reason...

NME was never as good as Sounds...

anyhow, as you'd expect, I prefer MOJO.

If you're Mojo's still working, why fix it?
