With all the warring between HD DVD and Blu-Ray, it's been easy to forget that good old DivX is also capable of HD.

By using crafty compression it can squeeze 1080i or 720p video onto standard DVD with almost as high quality as proper HD discs.

Now Panasonic's taken its DMP-BD30 and added a DivX badge to create the DMP-BD30EG/EE - the first DivX capable Blu-Ray player.

PS3 owners have been enjoying DivX capability since December but this is the first officially supported spinner. The upcoming DMP-BD50 will also be getting the same treatment.

Course, anyone who knows their way round a BitTorrent will know that DivX is often the bootlegger's format of choice. Not that we could say anything about that.

That's the Profile 1.1 player I've been waiting for, still waiting for the UK availability...zzzz It has got good reviews.

Be aware that it'll only decode DD/DTS onboard, you'll need a new amp if you want TrueHD etc. It'll go nicely with my Onkyo 705
