Lifespan of 2g ?
How long do you think 2g will last before being replaced with 3g ?
I think with a lot of 2g phones still for sale and the fact that in some areas of the country 3g is still pretty patchy it could be a long while before the 2g networks get switched off. although ofcom seems to pushing the networks to move more towards 3g esp now they are planning to remove the 900mhz 2g spectrum used by 02 and vodafone and auction it for 3g networks. 5-10 years will 2g be gone ? |

It will be for sometime yet as 3g's range doesn't span as much as 2g networks so 2g will be there to fill the gaps.

I suppose the networks have spent a large amount of money on the 2g networks, I do feel it will be gradually phased out though, but 3g coverage really needs to improve I live in Inverness and 3g is great in the city on most networks (except 3) but surrounding areas have no 3g coverage.
I suspect though over the next 5-10 years the networks will gradually try to phase customers over to 3g and use 2g as a backup still in poor coverage areas. The battery life will need to improve on 3g phones as well, I find myself switching my phone to 2g, until i use the net etc at which point i turn it back into 3g mode and I know many people who have the 3g turned off because of battery consumption. |

I don't think they will be able to scrap 2g based networks for a while certain parts of the UK still haven't got any 3g coverage at all especially here in Wales.
