Hello

I am looking at buying a HDTV today from Comet. There are two that i have seen:

PHILIPS 42PFL5522D/05 at £675
and
SAMSUNG LE40M87BDX/XEU at £799

Both LCD. The samsung is only 40" whereas the Phillips is 42", however the Samsung is 1080p and the Phillips isnt.

My question is - Would the extra £125 be worth spending to get 1080p even though im loosing 2" in size?

Thanks

The samsung is higher contrast too!

I would say pay the extra, but I think they are both oldish models now.

Ignore contrast ratios, there's no standard method for measuring them, so the figure are meaningless - a larger figure may well be worse.

They are a very good guide and from what I have seem they are fairly accurate.

Apart from the Sonys have a high contrast and a rubbish picture compared with something like a Pioneer.

You obviously have much too small a sample - just compare the pictures, not the figures. Samsung suddenly massively increased their contrast ratios, while still using the identical panels - purely by altering their measuring methods.

Until a standard method is used and enforced, it's meaningless.

That's your personal opinion, the only Pioneers I've seen (two of them) have been the worst HDTV's of all I've installed Sky HD on. Although to be fair, Plasma isn't as good at HD as an LCD, which is what makes them generally better at SD.

I wasn't aware Sony's claimed particularly high contrast ratios either?.

Well about pioneers I think you were looking at faulty TVs because the Pioneers are the best money can by and make Sky HD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray look amazing. The deep blacks and the rich colours are better than anything else.

As for sony they offer upto 16,000:1 contrast which is the same as Pioneer and the pioneer screens have a lot higher contrast visually.

Heh, that's easier said than done, unless you have a TV store nearby that actually sets up their TVs properly!
