It really is rubbish live.

She has a studio voice.

I bet she's grateful for the invention of the vocoder.

She has good pop songs.

You think having an average voice stopped Jacko, Britney or Madonna? With a pop singer it's an overall package, she's not pretending to be the next Janis Joplin or whoever, she claims her idol is Madonna.

Just watched the video again,I would agree its a hard song to sing.Imagine Cliff Richard trying to sing Iron Maiden?! Each singer has their range and Maria Carey's isnt Rihanna's.Simple as that.

Ive heard worse.

LOL. i just think shes far too overhyped now considering her voice is merely average.

I agree she has good songs (which she didn't write) but Michael Jackson's voice is immense, I agree about Madonna and Britney though.

Yeah but she makes class songs. Like Madonna the're good pieces of pop.

Kathryn Jenkins is clearly a better singer than Rihanna
But Umbrella is by far a much better song than the rubbish that Jenkins sings.

That's a fairly broad statement to make. She doesn't have the best range or most powerful voice in the world and so singing a technically difficult song like that is a terrible choice.

But she can sing, and her live performances of her own songs have come on leaps and bounds since she first appeared. She's still not perfect live, but she's alot better.

As people say, she's got a "package". She does pretty well in interviews, she looks great, she dances and I actually think she has a great studio voice. The Barbados "twang" in her accent allows her to distinguish her records from other singers. These attributes make up for her below par live performances and when paired with the right songs, you've got a pop star selling 4 million albums.

The appeal and success of this talentless bint continues astound me. She cannot sing and her songs are dull, bland drivel. You could argue that Britney cannot sing either, but the songs she did early in her career (Baby One More Time, etc) were great, catchy pop records. Umberella-ella-ella is a steaming pile of turd in comparisan.

She is a very poor immitation of Beyonce, minus the talent and good looks.

I saw her performance at The Brits with Klaxons, and watching that I was struck with how bad a singer she was.
I thought she was truly diabolical going by that performance.

Mind you it doesn't matter, because apparently it seems like you can win Brit awards anyway even if you aren't a good singer. They were handing Brits out like Smarties to some curious choices.
(That's the bitter off topic paragraph by the way)

Nothing against Rihanna whatsoever, but I don't think she's a good singer. But anyway, her songs last year were strong, which to some extent counteracts any deficiency of singing skills.

I agree that she isn't much of a singer....but she is a good entertainer, she is very pretty, and her songs are catchy, good pop songs.

She's gorgeous but like most singers she's not good live. But I gotta disagree I think her pop songs are some of the best out there.

I had a really big argument with one of my good friends recently over Rihanna. My friend claimed she had "one of the most soulful voices of all time."

I had to correct that statement.

Rihanna has a pop voice. I don't think you can say she has a "soulful voice" and even if you could, "One of the MOST soulful voices of all time??" Very doubtful!

I think she's average to be honest. I don't find her that attractive, her songs sound very similar and I think she has quite a whiny voice.

I know people have said the same about Madonna - I like Madonna but to me, Rihanna is pretty average.

Aretha Franklin - now if my friend had said that she had one of the most soulful voices of all time, THAT I couldn't dispute.

Rihanna works with some great producers that come up with the most catchy beats for her and that's why she is so successful. Her vocal talent however, is very average and that's saying it nicely. I wouldn't go as far as saying that she can't sing period. She sounds good but only with heavy editing and her live performances are almost unbearable to hear

Well said. To be fair, I used to say exactly the same thing about Kylie Minogue in the 1980s/early 1990s. Admittedly it was a different era, different style of music but look at how popular Minogue was in the late 80s/early 90s - that SAW "hit factory" sound was so big over here at the time and those beats were catchy. I heard Minogue sing live twice around 1990 and she was very weak. In fact, I distinctly recall watching an interview with Stock and Aitken - Pete Waterman wasn't present and the interviewer was asking them their thoughts about the acts miming on Top of the Pops etc. Well suffice to say Stock/Aitken were very unflattering about Ms. Minogue's live vocal performance!

Rihanna is the same - average vocals, a bit of gloss in the studio and they get the song sounding good. However, make her sing live and the truth is exposed.

Really, even on CD.... "Unfaithful" the worst nasal-ly attempt that i heard.

I give credit to Umbrella that suits her type of voice perfectly.
