Could i have an hdmi>dvi cable and then a dvi to vga cable?

Does anyone know of another cheap way to do this?

Won't work. HDMI and DVI will happily talk to each other as they are both digital and use compatible formats. However VGA is analogue. So without a Digital to Analogue converter of some description you won't be able to connect the HDMI out of the PS3 to a VGA socket on your monitor.

What may have caused the confusion id that you can get DVI to VGA cables. However they do not actually connect DVI to VGA (if that makes sense). As I said DVI is digital and VGA is analogue so there is no way you can connect the two with just a bit of wire. So in that case how does a DVI-VGA cable work?

The spec for the DCI connector has a number of formats. One of which is a combined digital and analogue connector. It has two sets of terminals, one for the digital DVI signal and a separate set for analogue VGA. The DVI-VGA cable connects the VGA socket to the analogue pins on teh DVI socket.

A HDMI to DVI cable however connects the HDMI plug to the digital pins on the DVI plug. So even if you were to plug the two cables together you wouldn't get anything out anyway as the HDMI and VGA plugs are wired to different pins on the DVI plugs. So no signal path from HDMI to VGA anyway.

Does the PS3 have an RGB output of some description? If so you can get converters that take RGB and convert to VGA.

the ps3 can output Hd through its own Avi port (not the HDMI port), it outputs component, and since most monitors with a vga port will accept RGB ect, it will work.

so the lead i mentioned above should work, i use a similar one to connect to my projector, only my lead outputs RGB component the goes to another lead which sends the RGB component to the VGA of my monitor, (as it accepts Component through VGA).

nyway, the lead avove should work:yawn:

If that was a reply to my post then my previous post and yours crossed in the ether I was actually replying to the OP about HDMI to VGA but since our posts crossed it kind of came out as though I was replying to you.
