Toshiba DVR17

Hey, just wondering if you could help me with this possible purchase I could make..

I'm after a DVD/VCR Combo, mainly because I need to save some VHS on DVD (I currently don't have a VCR).

I've chosen this one purely because it also supports DivX files too - so no faffing around converting them so they can play on my current DVD.

I was wondering, with this player, can I record stuff from Freeview onto DVD?

Does anybody have this/review - or an alternative that can do this job for cheaper/better?

Thanks in advance

dont buy a combo

the video will break down and the whole thing will have to go to get repaired

what stuff do you need it for, whats on the tapes ?

The things on the tapes are design/architecture related rpogrammes from Uni - they are all on VHS format - I was hoping to borrow them, and bang them on to DVD.

That way not only could I watch them, I'd have a copy for reference in the future..

Do they all breakdown? And if so, in that case it is better if I just buy a cheapo one from Asda, and when breaks down, take it back and get another?

Take a look at the panasonic dmrez47 or 48 when it comes out. We have had really reliability on these models, but they are at a sensible price for build quality. They also have freeview built in too, sadly no divx on either of these models though.
Are you trying to record in divx or playback?
Would be surprised if the tosh could record in divx.

I'm looking for playback in DivX - not recording

The Panasonic ones you listed are too expensive tbh from what i want to spend...I wouldn't like to spend over £150..

PS: I just wanted to ask - on the sign at Currys it said it was Analgoue or something - the same info is on the Comet website on the link I provided...does that mean it can't record stuff from Freeview which is built into the TV?

"Analogue" means you'll just get the normal 5 terrestrial channels on it's own tuner.
You can still record from an external Freeview box connected by scart lead...which is to be preferred over trying to record Freeview from an IDTV.

Having thought about it, I think I'm going to just go for one of the ones in Asda...

If a combi is going to breakdown..I'd rather save myself the hassle and time and just go for a cheap and cheerful model, that if it does go, won't be the end of the world.

Main thing is that I can burn videos onto DVD.

Thanks for your help!

yes cheap and cheerful will do you for all you need it for

try and get one with a hard drive

you will be able to use it for recording off telly and stuff and less failed recordings by doing it by ' on the fly'
